  2. What is Listening to the River? Informal Science Education project developed under a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to LIAA* An opportunity to engage students in self-directed exploration and multi-media documentation of their local watershed *Land Information Access Association, Traverse City, MI
  3. Informal Science Education is: Science learning that occurs outside of the classroom; Engaging to learners of all ages and backgrounds; Voluntary, open-ended and self-directed; Hands-on, promoting active STEM* experiences *(Science Technology Engineering Math)
  4. Why is this exciting for your community? Opportunity to showcase your watershed(s) and build capacity in local organizations; Opportunity for local youth to develop science and technology skills; Shows what’s possible with community partnerships.
  5. Project Activities Watershed Discovery Youth teams (ages 11-17) join volunteer guides and science/technology experts to explore and digitally document various aspects of a local watershed. The focus is on eight essential watershed characteristics. Field excursions are combined with media capture to produce nature stories.
  6. Project Activities Technology Capturing media using advanced sound recording equipment, digital cameras and GPS units; Editing and publishing watershed stories using multimedia software.
  7. Project Activities Publishing and Presenting LTTR website Mediascape www.listeningtotheriver.org Radio broadcasts Content for local exhibits or kiosks
  8. What’s in it for Teens? Field trips into the local watershed, focusing on science and technology; Access to technology such as GPS units, super sensitive microphones, digital and video cameras, editing and broadcast software; Opportunities to broadcast their work, their perceptions and their issues through local media channels; Connections with others who share similar interests.

  11. What else can LTTR provide? Equipment loan package (set up in 4 separate kits): 4 Digital audio recorders 4 Laptops, if needed 4 GPS units (Garmin Etrex or Rhino) 4 Digital cameras, 2 digital video cameras Specialty microphones, if needed (parabolic, shotgun, underwater) Accessories (cords, compact storage media, external hard drives, chargers, etc.)

  13. What is required to participate? Determine a key organization that can: Gather likely partners; Seek resource support; Coordinate project in your community.
