This curriculum will cover World History and U.S. History from 1492 to 1877, building on previous standards and linking to 5th grade concepts. Communication will be regular through weekly updates on our website, email, and phone. Homework will be assigned 2-3 times a week, aimed at reinforcing classroom lessons. Welcome to the Red Team! Kim Marfy 8th Grade American History Room 111
The Curriculum • World History/US History 1492-1877 • Will build on 6th and 7th grade standards in some respects…. but we will also be linking to the 5th grade standards very strongly
Parent Communication • Website ---generally updated weekly contains all plans, notes, worksheets available for download • PIV ---generally 24 hour turn around, X=exempt Z=zero 0=missed all points • Email kmarfy@crestwoodschools.org • Phone --- (330) 274-2249 • Red Team Newsletter stapled to report cards.
Homework • I generally use homework to reinforce lessons taught in class. • Occasionally, I use homework to enrich or extend meaning of a concept taught in class. • I never give homework for the sake of just giving homework.
Homework • Students can expect homework 2-3 days a week • Homework points are weighted as ½ • All students should complete all HW • However, each student gets one free HW pass per grading period. Students not missing any HW get 30 bonus points • Wildcard day unannounced once at the end of 1st, 2nd & 3rd grading periods
Assessments/Quizzes/Tests • Should Know quizzes weekly (questions posted online) • Quizzes after Sec 1 & 2 of Chapter • Tests at the end of each chapter • Common Assessments at the end of each grading period
Interventions • AE is time provided daily for students. Making good use of this time is important to student achievement. • Study Tables available almost every day in the back of my room during AE. Any teacher will allow students to come for help. All students have to do is ask. • Kids who come to Study Tables get treat every time they come – candy, pretzel, pencil…. • Sometimes attendance at Study Tables is not optional • Test Retakes for “C”, “D”, “F” scores, I take the better score--- students must observe the time window. (different form)
Interventions • PIV comments • Organizational expectations and assistance (5 section notebook, tabs, highlighters, folder, covered book) • Packets for common assessments, then a common assessment retake is mandatory
Incentives • Candy for coming to Study Tables • Classes earning at least 70% of A’s earn donuts • Stickers for perfect papers • Positive communications (parent, administrator, guidance counselor) • Good Grades!
Assume Goodwill • I really love my job. I totally enjoy working with each and every student. • My students are very important to me.
