History • The term “stereotype” derives from the Greek words “stereo” which means firm, solid and “typos “ impression hence "solid impression“. • These generalizations have their roots in experiences we have had ourselves, read about in books and magazines, seen in movies or television, or have had related to us by friends and family:

  5. 2. Stereotypes In Society • Stereotypes are everywhere. • Stereotyping is a form of prejudice that forms damaging images of an individual, by classifying him according to a particular characteristic that is found among the group of people that the individual is associated with.

  6. 2.1 Stereotypes About Women and Men • Gender stereotypes are generalizations about the roles of each gender • The male is seen as competent, stable, tough, confident, strong. • The ideal female is seen as warm, emotional, kind, polite, sensitive, friendly, fashionable, gentle.

  7. 2.2 Effects of Stereotypes • We expect more from people of high status groups

  8. 3. Stereotypes in Europe and USA • The stereotypes first appeared in Europe and they are by any nature: cultural, religious , racist etc. • Americans are stereotyped as hardworking people, whether in their jobs or other matters, but as well American people in general may be portrayed as racist or racialist, often discriminating against their minorities.

  9. 4. Anti-Semitic Stereotypes • It may take the form of religious teachings that proclaim the inferiority of Jews, for instance, or political efforts to isolate, oppress, or otherwise injure them.

  10. 5. Solutions • Remember never judge anyone without getting to know them first, don’t judge a book by its cover • Think, if you would not like it said to you don’t say it
