  2. Parts of the earth • Hydrosphere- water makes up about 70% of the earth’s surface. • Lithosphere- the earth’s rocky, outermost layer.

  3. Parts of the Earth • Atmosphere- the layer of gases surrounding the earth. • Biosphere- the area on or near the earth’s surface that supports plant & animal life.

  4. Earth’s Structure • Core- mostly iron & nickel. • Mantle- a layer of semi-solid rock around the core; 1800 miles thick. • Crust- thin, rocky surface layer; 4 to 45 miles thick.

  5. Convection Currents • The heating & cooling of the mantle that causes the crust to move. • Internal force responsible for building new landforms.

  6. Plate Tectonics • The theory that the earth’s outer shell is not one solid piece of rock but is broken into a number of moving plates.

  7. Continental Drift • The theory that the continents were once part of one large landmass & moved to their present positions after millions of years.
