MCS • Dedicated MCS platform too expensive • KEARSARGE (LHD) was ideal ship-of-opportunity • Deck spots for squadron of MH-53s • Outstanding connectivity (comms, MEDAL, intel) • No big decks available during OIF • CLEVELAND, PONCE and GUNSTON HALL(LPD) • Only 3 deck spots • Inadequate comms for MIW command ship • Force flow an issue without dedicated MCS • Inadequate and unreliable C5s

  10. LCS not an MCM • Some think that LCS will replace dedicated • Long term goal to get men out of minefield • BUT, LCS has: • No sonar • No sweep capability • Not designed for low magnetic signature

MIW in Sea Power 21 • Today: 19 independent strike groups • 12 Carrier Battle Groups • 12 Amphibious Ready Groups • 7 Mid-East Force Surface Action Groups • Sea Power 21: 37 independent strike groups • 12 Carrier Strike Groups • 12 Expeditionary Strike Groups (amphibs+surface combatants+SSN) • 9 Strike/TBMD Surface Action Groups • 4 SSGN/SOF Strike Forces • WHERE DO WE PUT MIW ASSETS?

Study Recommendations • Continue development of next generation AMCM systems • If MH-60S / future AMCM systems meet schedule and capability requirements, plan for transition of DAMCM to MH-60S • If MH-60S and next generation systems do not meet schedule and capability requirements be prepared to fund and execute MH-53E SLEP

  14. CMWC and Homeland Security • Coast Guard Supported CDR • MH-53Es For Minehunting in Port Approaches and Deep Waters. • EOD Detachment for Conventional & WMD Response • MCM or MHC Ships To Support MCM OPS in CONUS

Mainstreaming MIW • MIW staff and forces included in 9 CVBG/ARG exercises during FY02/03. • MCM forces have participated in both East & West coast JTFEXs. • MCM Squadron commanders are integrating with BG staffs and SOOT teams as part of BG workup training.  • Deploying BG are sending staffs to the MWTC MCM BG COI’s
