  1. Props and Hand Gestures Preparing for the Demonstration Speech

  2. Besides gestures and props… • You should use the manner in which you speak to convey meaning. • There are several ways to infuse your speech with excitement and variety without using gestures or visual aids

  3. Variety… try to vary the following aspects… • Pitch: the highness or lowness of your voice should vary slightly throughout your speech to emphasize facts and convey emotion • Inflection: the stress put upon words can convey a certain attitude • Monotone: a monotone voice is boring and often causes the listener to drift off • Rate: the speed of delivery affects how and if the message is received • Do NOT vary pronunciation and articulation. Do not OVER pronounce words.

  4. When vocal variety is not enough..

  5. Hand gestures… • Should enhance meaning • Should never be distracting • Should not become repetitive or predictable • Should not act out or mime what is being said • Should remain in an acceptable physical range • Should try not to be accusatory (pointing) • Can help structure the speech

  6. Let’s practice… • Read the following with appropriate hand gestures: • There are three reasons why you need to buy this product! First of all, the price will never be better. Secondly, the competitor’s product does not work as well, and finally, with this special offer, you receive one free Robogrip with your purchase!

  7. Try this one… • Today could be the most important day of your life. Before today, you might have had no idea how to change a flat tire. But after this short demonstration, you should feel secure and confident about changing your own tire, and this knowledge might someday save your life!

  8. When not moving your hands to create meaning… they should remain comfortably at your side, slightly to the front.

  9. Visual Aids Using visuals to convey meaning

  10. What are the benefits of visual aids? • Visual Aids develop and hold interest • They allow for showing, not just telling • Help lower stress and burden of speaker • Provide clarity and explicit examples

  11. What types of visual aids are there? • A model • Photographs • Drawings and Diagrams • Videos and video clips • Transparencies or overheads • People • Powerpoint slides (we will not be using PP for this speech)

  12. Keys to Visual Aid Success • Keep the aid simple • Prepare visual aids well in advance • Be familiar with your aid • Be sure it is visible or legible for all • Don’t use a distracting aid that will take away from you • Display the aids only when using them • Don’t break eye contact when using the aid • Don’t let the aid just sit there • Speak while you are doing things! Don’t talk then demonstrate. Synthesize!! • Practice with your visual aids

  13. More tips to curb your nerves… • Practice your entire speech several times. • Take a deep breath when you get to the front of the room. • Do not start until all eyes are on you and I tell you to begin. • Come to class on time. • You can bring a bottle of water with you the day of your speech. • Run to the bathroom a class before this one.
