  6. Language Arts/Reading • Flexible Reading Groups • Daily 5/CAFE reading program • Wonders ~ English Language program • Core Literature – Little Bear, Harry the Dirty Dog, Frog & Toad, etc. • Phonics • Letter sounds, short & long vowels, blends, compound words, contractions

  7. Spelling Program • Spelling • Mostly done in class • Focus on spelling patterns and sight words • Monday thru Thursday - A variety of spelling activities to support the learned concept • Friday – Spelling Test with dictation

  8. Writing • Writing integrated into all subjects • Journal writing • Poetry • Story writing – relates to story of the week or activities • Beginning, middle, end • Complete sentences with descriptive words • GOAL – Write a paragraph • Topic sentence/Main Idea, 3 details, conclusion • Complete sentences with capitals & periods

Curriculum • English/Language Arts • Reading Non-fiction as much as fiction • Discuss reading by using evidence from the text • Non-fiction writing using evidence • Math • Focus on key concepts, deepening instruction • Speed & accuracy • Deeper understanding of concepts, explain how you got your answer, multiple ways of getting an answer

  10. Online Resources • BrainPop Jr. • IXL – Math practice website • Skills students learn in first grade! These skills are organized into categories. IXL will track your score, and the questions will automatically increase in difficulty as you improve! • Raz-Kids • Hundreds of interactive ebooks that students can read at home and in class.Students can listen to books for modeled fluency, read books for practice, and then record themselves reading so teachers can monitor progress. Every leveled eBook has an accompanying eQuiz to test reading comprehension.

Homework • Homework will be posted on Edlio monthly. • Due at the end of the month. • Bring Homework folder everyday! • Reading 20 minutes nightly. • The purpose of homework is for practice and review. • You can help your child, but if they are struggling and it is taking more than 30 min. please write a note or email the teacher.

  20. Scholastic Book Orders • Each month students will get a new Scholastic Book Order Catalog to order books either online or write a check to Scholastic Books and return it to Mrs. Lloyd by the due date.

  21. Birthdays • Please no food items – school policy You may donate a book to the class on your child’s birthday • Small Goodie bags are okay – no food. • Birthday Book • Each student makes a page for the birthday boy or girl

  22. Star StudentAll About Me • The All About Me poster is a great way for students to practice their public speaking skills. • A student is chosen once a week on Monday and they have until Friday to complete the poster. • The student will share their poster with the class…so be prepared! • The class will make a book for the Star Student and they will receive it at the end of the week.

  23. Absences • Please call the Absence Hotline at Dapplegray if your child is going to miss school. • Work missed due to absences can be obtained either through accessing Edline, or when the child returns to school. • If a planned absence will exceed 5 days please contact the office for a independent study contract at least a week in advance so the school and your child get credit.
