  3. The required courses, description • International Cooperation in Europe and Beyond (ICEB) code 08006 • Why/how do states cooperate (or not!) An examination of United Nations, World Trade Organization, European Union, and theoretical tools to help that examination • Comparative Politics in a Globalized World (Sem 2) • You’ll develop practical skills to understand comparative politics in an international context. Applies the comparative method to core questions of comparative and international politics: • Sample Qs: What makes a democracy; can democracy be imposed from abroad? Why are some countries rich while others are poor? Why does globalization affect states differently? What causes revolutions? Is terrorism changing in a globalized world?

Required courses, cont. • Introduction to Political Data Analysis (sem 2) • Will introduce you to quantitative methods used to understand politics and international relations; substantive focus: humanitarian intervention, electoral behaviour. • For information on all degree requirements, see DRPS and click on your degree title: http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/14-15/dpt/drps_sps.htm

Required courses, cont. • Fundamentals 2 (4 weeks only, 1 hour sessions) • Sem 1 we’ll focus on political thinkers and how to read theory • Sem 2 we’ll focus on developing skills for the transition to Honours, including advanced academic reading, identifying research questions, developing arguments, and effective academic writing. • Required for single honours but ALL are welcome to attend

  8. How shall I choose my options? 3 different approaches 1. Continue with outside subject you’ve taken in Year 1 (language, economics, etc) • Look here to find out what 2nd year subject courses are available to you: http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/13-14/dpt/cx_colhss.htm 2. Try a course from another outside subject (sociology, history, social anthropology, etc…) • http://www.drps.ed.ac.uk/13-14/dpt/cx_colhss.htm 3. Or try a completely new ‘stand alone’ outside course. Several options…………..

  10. Filling out the form • In early June YOU WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL FROM THE SCHOOL ALERTING YOU TO THE RELEVANT WEBSITE. CHECK YOUR UNIVERSITY EMAIL ACCOUNT • You will also be sent links to course descriptions and codes and your specific degree requirements • Deadline for submission of form is end of June
