  1. Group 1 Improvement of bike paths with addition of tunnels and bridges

Introduction According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles: In the past 3 years, there have been an average of 117 bicycle accidents per year in Alachua County In the past 10 years, there have been 24 bicycle fatalities due to car crashes in Alachua Causes: Bicyclist will not stop at intersections Cars cannot see bicyclists crossing at night Failure of both drivers and bicyclists to follow traffic law patterns

  3. Objective • Reduce conflicts between bicyclists and motor vehicles • Improve bicycle movement on and off campus • Increase connectivity between points of interest that are on and off campus • Expand ability for students and staff to commute to campus on bicycles.

  4. Solution Add tunnels or bridges to key campus entry points

Bridge vs. Tunnel Tunnel: • There is only a slight change in elevation, which makes it easier for bicyclist to use a tunnel as opposed to a bridge Bridges: • Architecturally coincides with the area • Many people will be leaving the hospital at night • At night, it would be safer to bike across an exposed bridge than through a tunnel at

Criteria Existing bike paths- tunnel/bridge located within 50 feet on either side of the intersections chosen Population Data- located within 20 feet of a road with greater than 50% UF student TAZ Key Campus Entry Points- Yes/No Bicycle Counts- located in areas with greater than 175 bicycles/day (according to MTPO and UF Master Plan) Average Daily Traffic Counts- located in areas with higher than 25,000 vehicles/day

Population data Conclusions Creating bike tunnels and bridges adjacent to frequently traveled bus routes would provide students with more opportunity to bike to campus • UF students frequently travel on Archer, SW 34th and NW 13th • Areas just north of University with high student populations • Higher populations in areas south of University • Along 34th, 13th, Archer and SW 16th
