  1. GENRES A genre is a text category defined by style, content, and form. There are many types of genres, here are some examples:

  3. Non Fiction- • Informational • Biography • Newspaper • Memoir • Magazines • Autobiography • Internet sites

  4. Realistic Fiction • Realistic fiction, although untrue, could actually happen. Some events, people, and places may even be real.

  5. Historical Fiction • Historical fiction tells a story that is set in the past. That setting is usually real and drawn from history, and often contains actual historical persons, but the main characters tend to be fictional.

  6. Science Fiction Science fiction is a genre of fiction dealing with imaginative content such as futuristic settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, parallel universes, extraterrestrial lives, and paranormal abilities.

  7. Adventure • Adventure fiction is a genre of fiction in which an adventure, an exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger, forms the main storyline.

  8. Myth A traditional story, esp. one concerning the early history of a people or explaining some natural or social phenomenon, and typically involving supernatural beings or events.

  9. Fantasy • Fantasy is genre of fiction that commonly uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary plot element, theme,, or setting.

  10. Mystery • Mystery is a genre of fiction in which a detective, either an amateur or a professional, solves a crime or a series of crimes.

  11. Folk Tales • A traditional narrative, usually anonymous, handed down orally -- e.g., fables, fairy tales, legends, etc.

  12. Biography • The story of a person's life, written by another. Autobiography The story of a person’s life written by himself or herself.

  15. Memoir • A memoir differs from a simple autobiography by not focusing on the author as the primary subject matter, but on people and events in the author's life. Emphasis is placed on personal observations about external events.

  16. Poetry • Poetry is a verse written t create a response of thought and feeling from the reader. It often uses rhythm and rhyme.
