Define: Encourage • In English, to “encourage” means: • To give courage • To give confidence • To give comfort • To give cheer • In Greek, “encourage” comes from parakaleo (verb): • Greek compound word – para(“beside”) + kaleo (“to call”) • Literally, “to call alongside” • To ask to come and be present, to call to one’s side • To instill someone with courage or cheer; encourage

God’s Will for Encouragement • Encourage One Another – 1 Thess. 5:11 • Imperative – a command from God • Second person plural – “you all everybody” do this • Present tense – continued & constant action • Reciprocal – everyone does to everyone • The divine goal of Christian encouragement • “…You know how we exhorted(parakaleo), and encouraged(paramutheomai), and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children, that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory” (1 Thess. 2:11-12). • Result: The growth of the body – Eph. 4:16

Please know that I’m thinking about you and praying for you…” • The sick – “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers” (3 John 2). • The bereaved – “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble” (Psa. 46:1). • The lonely – “He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we may boldly say: ‘The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?’” (Heb. 13:5-6). • The downcast – “But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint” (Isa. 40:31).

Please know that I’m thinking about you and praying for you…” • The spiritually weak – “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58). • The erring brother – “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful” (Heb. 10:23). • The discouraged – “In everything…let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds…I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Phil. 4:6-7, 13).

Please know that I’m thinking about you and praying for you…” • The penitent brother – “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is [His] faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘Therefore I hope in Him!’” (Lamen. 3:22-24). • The brother overtaken in sin – “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith…But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you” (1 Pet. 5:8-10).

I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand” (Isa. 41:10). • A widow – “A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation. God sets the solitary in families” (Psa. 68:5-6). I’m glad you’re in our family! • New parents – “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up” (Deut. 6:4-9).

Please know that I’m thinking about you and praying for you…” • Newlyweds – “Submitting to one another in the fear of God. [Wife’s name], submit to [husband’s name], as to the Lord… [Husband’s name], love [wife’s name], just as Christ also loved the church & gave Himself for her…‘[Husband’s name] shall leave his father & mother and be joined to [wife’s name], and [husband’s & wife’s names] shall become one flesh’” (Eph. 5:22-33). • New convert – “Giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love…grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 1:5-8; 3:18).

Please know that I’m thinking about you and praying for you…” • Young people & teenagers – “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Tim. 4:12). Or, “Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, ‘I have no pleasure in them’” (Ecc. 12:1). Or, “Pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart” (2 Tim. 2:22). Or, “Test all things; hold fast what is good. Abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thess. 5:21-22). Or, “Abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul” (1 Pet. 2:11).

  12. 101 Ways to Encourage Others • Send a note of appreciation to a fellow Christian, stating at least one thing you appreciate about him/her. • “You may not know this, but I really appreciate that you…” • “I really like (liked) your…” • Send a note expressing Biblical resemblance: • “I read this verse in the Bible the other day and thought of you…” • Send a short note to a close brother or sister in Christ: • “Just wanted to say that I’m thinking about you.” • “I feel so blessed that you are my friend and my brother.” • “I’m praying that all will go well when you ____.” • “Looking forward to being in heaven with you.” • “You are a great encouragement to me!”

  13. 101 Ways to Encourage Others • Be humble – 1 Pet. 5:6; Phil. 2:3-4; Rom. 12:16; Matt. 5:3 • Be courteous/polite – 1 Pet. 3:8; Rom. 12:10 • Speak the truth – Eph. 4:25; Col. 3:9 • Forgive one another – Eph. 4:32; Col. 3:13; Matt. 5:7 • Always speak with graciousness, seasoned with salt – Col. 4:6 • Distribute to the needs of the saints – Rom. 12:13 • Be given to hospitality – Rom. 12:13; 1 Pet. 4:9 • Bless those who persecute you – Rom. 12:14 • Genuinely rejoice with those who rejoice – Rom. 12:15 • Genuinely weep with those who weep – Rom. 12:15 • Repay no one evil for evil, control yourself – Rom. 12:17 • Live peaceably with all men – Rom. 12:18; Matt. 5:9 • Feed and give drink to your enemy (coals of fire) – Rom. 12:20

Make a list of things I can do.” • Go out of your way to not show partiality/favoritism –Jas. 2:1-9 • Arrive to services early to greet folks as they arrive – 3 John 14 • Perform random (& unexpected) acts of kindness – Eph. 4:32 • Make something “your thing” to do & do it – Ecc. 9:10 • Example: Homemade chicken pot pie to sick, recovering, bereaved, etc. • Willingly sacrifice your time without grumping – Phil. 2:14 • Decide you’re going to encourage or you’re not, but don’t complain! • Be positive and accentuate the positive – Phil. 4:4-8 • Take someone to lunch – 1 Cor. 5:11; Acts 16:34; Matt. 14:19 • Offer to babysit for young couples or single moms – Mt. 19:14

  16. 101 Ways to Encourage Others • Be sensitive to people’s problems/concerns – 1 Tim. 5:23 • Find out what brethren like and surprise them – 2 Tim. 4:13 • Favorite candy bar, favorite dessert, favorite flower • Find out what brethren need and help them out – Eph. 6:22 • Looking for a house, looking for a sale on shoes, looking for a used car • Call brethren just to see how doing or say “thinking about you” • Go thru the Church Directory. Call one page (five calls) every day/week. • Demonstrate that you are trustworthy – Phil. 2:19-21 • Stand up for someone who has been wronged – 2 Tim. 4:16 • Rejoice when good things happen at church – Acts 11:23 • Encourage brethren to remain true to the Lord – Acts 11:23 • Encourage new converts to continue in the faith – Acts 14:22 • Apologize, accept wrong for the good of others – 1 Cor. 6:1-8

  18. 101 Ways to Encourage Others EXTRAS: • Sit with a visitor in Bible class or worship • Listening does not require the use of the mouth • Take a difficult child during worship • Sitting behind me when I was alone • Surprise parents, go to house, watch kids • Bring a visitor to Bible class or worship • Don’t be afraid to move from your favorite pew • Notice and talk to little kids • Pay for a teen to go on a youth activity (like camp) • Utilize your skills to help others in the church
