  2. Washington's Administration • French Revolution • France declares war on England • Who’s side do we join ???????? • Washington decides to be: Neutral

Jays Treaty • Washington sent John Jay to England to mend ties with the British and find a resolution……. • Britain got the right to seize goods sent to French ports • America didn’t get compensated • America had to pay off Pre-War debt • America was able to be a neutral country • Britain agreed to give up forts in the American frontier • America became a favored trading nation with British • America got exclusive trading with the British Caribbean

  4. Pinckney’s Treaty • Washington sent Thomas Pinckney to Spain to keep the peace and obtain western lands ......... • Granted the U.S. rights to navigate the Mississippi river and deposit goods @ New Orleans

  5. Washington Administration • Retires after 2 terms • “believed if a president served more than 2 terms he would appear King Like” • Warned against: • Political Parties • Alliances with other nations • Sectionalism

  6. Election of 1796 • Federalists – John Adams • Democratic Republicans – Thomas Jefferson • Adams wins • Jefferson becomes V.P.

Alien & Sedition Act • Proposed by: • The Federalists • Was: • A law that required new immigrates to wait 14 years before they could become citizens • Immigrants tended to vote Democratic-Republican • Couldn’t say anything bad about the federal government • Thrown in jail • Result • Unified the Democratic-Republicans • Created the Kentucky Virginia Resolution

  9. Kentucky Virginia Resolution • Thomas Jefferson and James Madison (Dem-Rep) will support Virginia & Kentucky against the Alien & Sedition Act • Argued: • Since the states wrote the constitution they could declare the law (A & S act) unconstitutional
