  1. COSMIC Staff Meeting July 1, 2008

  2. Outline • Progress in COSMIC-II planning (Ector) • Outcomes from ECMWF workshop • Ground-based GPS activities (Braun) • CDAAC updates (Schreiner) • COSMIC workshop in Taiwan (Kuo) • Student Program (Kim) • AMS Annual Meeting (Kuo) • COSMIC Open House on 10th July (Sara) • FinTools Update (Ingrid) • Congressional Trip to WDC (Ingrid)

  3. COSMIC-II planning • NOAA’s perspectives (Ector) • Possible division of responsibility: • NOAA: GPS receivers, launch, ground station operation, CDAAC processing • NSPO: Spacecraft, testing and integration, satellite operation • NSF-NSC Annual Meeting: Sep. 18, 2008 • Lou Lee will attend, and hope to have more in-depth discussion on the plan with senior NOAA and NSF management

  4. Taiwan Workshop • Lidia will visit CWB on 29-30 September to discuss collaboration on COSMIC data assimilation. • COSMIC workshop: 1-3 October, Howard International House. Deadline: 15th July 2008. • COSMIC-II planning meeting: 3-4 October, out-side Taipei. NSPO plans to invite several senior members from NOAA, NSF, and EUMETSAT to attend the meeting. • 13 U.S. students will visit NSPO, NCU, and attend the COSMIC workshop.

  5. ECMWF Workshop • Operational centers love COSMIC, and are horrified that it will end by 2011. • Strong support for the UCAR/CDAAC: • Consider UCAR is the “standard” in RO processing • There are “biases” for co-located GRAS and CHAMP soundings processed by other centers. • Like UCAR to reprocess GPS/MET data, as it is now very valuable • Like UCAR to process GRAS, PROBA-2 data • Like to have more interaction and help GRAS figure our how to open-loop data processing. • Like UCAR to release its processing software

  6. Kursinski is interested in working with UCAR on a LEO-LEO proof of concept mission • Interesting results were presented by Estel Cardellach on COSMIC ocean reflection. • Chris Marquardt is interested in visiting UCAR this summer • The international science community needs one center which can process all available GPSRO data for both weather and climate purposes. They consider UCAR is the best. Will we step up to the plate? This will expand our roles and responsibilities. We will need additional support. • Canada and EUMETSAT are interested in participating in COSMIC-II. Provision of ground-stations is a possible option.

  7. AMS Annual Meeting • Monday, 12th January: COSMIC Interagency Working Group Meeting • Tuesday, 13th January: COSMIC-NOAA Climate Meeting • Wednesday, 14th January: COSMIC Special Session in the 13th Integrated Observing and Assimilation Systems for Atmosphere, Oceans, and Land Surface (IOAS-AOLS) • Will need help in getting these meetings organized
