  1. MODERNIZATION Why the Need for Modernization, Legacy Modernization and Software Modernization? Modernization has been referred to as the process of change or the model of a progressive transition which reflects the movement of society from the traditional (pre-modern) phase to the modern stage. This unique model helps in identifying social variables which act as a benefit and contribute to the social development and progress of the societies. Amongst other sectors known to undergo this process of change, technology has been identified as the major source of social change –which is referred to as important alteration over time in cultural value and norms and behavior pattern. In spite of these, technology has been recognized as the sector of change which by itself does not bring change to the society but with its response, changes are caused. How? Before now, technology has been known though have not been put into use but with time, it paves way out and by that makes it possible for a more innovated and broad social change in the society. These changes through the centuries have evolved socially, economically, politically and industrially thereby resulting to change in the lives of millions of people throughout the world. This progressive transition is a continuous and open-ended process. Historically, this model is not a once-and-for all-time achievement but a dynamic principle that is built into a fabric of a modern to attain equilibrium. In modernization, there are seems to be two (2) main phases which carry the values and institutions of the society in an upward and progressive movement. The initial phase of this progressive transition is an initial resistance that sharpens and prolong the process. Afterward, begins the breeding of discontent on an increasing scale. On a world scale and an intensified

  2. level, a new material and social strain may be found as a threat to the expansion and growth on the society which the progressive transition is created. On the second phase of this, problems whose solution are often beyond the strength of the pre-modern are mostly faced. LEGACY MODERNIZATION Legacy modernization – is the continuous process of a transforming system that is applied mostly to a legacy system purposely to reduce costs and IT environment complexity, and also enable collaboration across the various platform, to improve and increase process flexibility and data consistency. This process was introduced to aim at transforming an already existing system into a web-based client system and also integrated multiple related systems. Although it has some challenges at the same, it ensures that the modernized system possesses similar strength in compatibility with the already existing format. In other terms, legacy modernization can as well be called a platform modernization or a software modernization – used in conversing, porting or rewriting of a legacy system into a modern or an up-to-date protocol, software libraries, programming language or hardware platform. This transformation system is appreciated in order to extend and retain the value of the investment (legacy investment) through transferring to a new platform. For companies to improve in their services and also provide faster access to information, software modernization is used as a constant attempt. This software updates combines the capability of past applications and reused to a certain point with the cutting edge of today’s technologies and software architecture.
