  1. THE MANY PEOPLE OF A COMMUNITY CHAPTER 8

  2. Lesson 1, pages 242-247 An IMMIGRANT is someone who comes to live in a country from somewhere else in the world. Some people choose to come to our country for the freedoms we offer. Some, like ENSLAVED AFRICANS, were brought to work on large farms called plantations. When immigrants arrived at Ellis Island, they had to be EXAMINED BY DOCTORS and INTERVIEWED BY OFFICIALS.

  3. Immigrants That Made a Difference Albert Einstein- a German immigrant who made an important difference in the areas of Math and Science. Madeleine K. Albright – came from Czechoslovakia and served as Secretary of State for the U.S. government. I. M. Pei – came from China to study architecture and has designed beautiful buildings all over the world.

  4. Continued… • Many immigrants today still keep many of their traditions. • A tradition is a custom, or way of doing something, that is passed on by families to their children. • Eating special foods • Religions • Holidays

  5. Lesson 2, pages 248-250 Many Irish immigrants, people from Ireland, voyaged to the U.S. to escape the POTATO FAMINE. A voyage is a journey. A famine is a time of hunger when there is little food. The Jeanie Johnson is a copy of the ship that carried the Irish immigrants to the U.S. and Canada. Both countries have created a POSTAGE STAMP showing an immigrant sailing ship.

  6. Lesson 3, pages 252-257 When immigrants first arrive in a new place, they often miss their home, family, language, and customs. Los Angeles, California is one of the largest cities in the U.S. They have a growing number of immigrants from Asia.

  7. Lesson 4, pages 260-265 We express our culture by the FOOD we eat, CLOTHING we wear, and the STORIES we write. The language people speak is also part of culture. Some cultures use CHARACTERS which are small symbols or pictures drawn with a brush. ART and MUSIC are also important parts of culture. MUSIC is sound made by voices or instruments.

  8. Continued… • Religion is another important part of culture. Many people who follow the same religion usually like to worship together. • Christians – church/cathedrals • Jewish- synagogues/temple • Islams- masjid/mosque • Churches, synogogues, and masjids are all places of worship.

  9. Lesson 5, pages 268-271 • People express their culture through holidays and celebrations. • Saint Patrick’s Day- day to celebrate Irish pride. • Cinco de Mayo- celebrated by Mexicans on the 5th of May. • Kwanzaa – Africans celebrate their culture and values. • New Years- celebrated by people throughout the world. We usually celebrate by staying up until midnight.
