Provides a valuable science/math/ technology educational resource for K-12 students and teachers • Created through collaboration of researchers at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University, curriculum and technology integration specialists from Teachers College, Columbia University, and classroom teachers from the New York City metropolitan area.

  4. Key feature is involvement of the scientists—their availability through workshops, web site postings, and e-mail provide teachers and students access to stimulating, cutting-edge research that help develop K-12 curriculum activities linked directly to “real world questions.”

  5. “Saturday Workshops for Educators” held monthly at the Lamont-Doherty campus in Palisades, N.Y follows this general format: • 9:00 – 9:30 General announcements • 9:30 – 10:15 Background Information • 10:30 – 12:00 Guest Scientist(s) Presentation(s) • 12:00 – 1:00 Lunch • 1:00 -- 3:00 Curriculum and Educational Technology development projects

  6. Who participates in E2C Workshops? • Secondary teachers from schools in New York metropolitan area • Teachers College, Columbia University and St. Thomas Aquinas College (Sparkill, NY) graduate science education students • Community College geoscience professors • High school students

  22. Selected comments from teachers “I have attended E2C workshops for nearly four years. Each month I come away with more and more information to be shared with my students. We use the suggested web sites to study weather and current events. They are given Web Quests each week as part of the regular teaching program. All of these were learned through your Saturday Teachers Workshops.”

Selected comments from teachers (2) “The pedagogy, technology, resources and ability to raise the bar in keeping science teachers informed about the cutting edges of science is truly contagious. This inspiration of science is, without doubt, passed on directly to my students. Use of technology on over 1000 pages of information on the E2C site is an excellent foundation that I utilize in developing my science curriculum.”

  24. Assessment of E2C Assumpcao assessed aspects of this program for her Teachers College doctoral dissertation. Conclusions: • E2C provides a model for understanding the power of building partnerships between the research institutions, teachers as classroom experts, and the content professionals as content experts, each one contributing equally within their area of expertise. • Of special value for the teachers were access to authoritative content and demonstrations of educational technologies. • Of special value for the researchers were formats for wider dissemination of their work to non-specialist audiences.

Lessons Learned from E2C • Importance of bridging the gap between the work of researchers and classroom teachers • Need teachers feel for professional development in technology in education • Need teachers feel to network with different professionals to share experiences • Research scientists’ needs for educational outreach • Need for developing effective, structured, consistent professional development programs

Additional Lessons Learned • Need for developing readily accessible materials that teachers can use in their daily lessons • Need to include teachers as research partners, as specialists in their classrooms • Need to design a program that s flexible and tailored to each teacher’s school culture and specific requirements • Need to develop formal partnerships between high education institutions and secondary schools • Need to take advantage of what technology allows and create a more collaborative model, with all participant having an active voice in the process
