  2. Pre Planning: Identification of Need 1.Develop/Review Student Learning Expectations 2. Examine alignment of learning expectations with assessments 3. Review assessment data 4. Identify areas of need based on assessment Plan: 1. Describe the current process for addressing the identified area of need (flow chart) 2. Review data to determine baseline performance in the specific area identified (Run Chart/Pareto Diagram) 3. Identify potential root causes contributing to the identified area of need (Cause & Effect Diagram, 5 Why’s, Relations Diagram) 4. Study research-based best practice/improvement theory addressing areas of need Action Research Overview for Professional Learning Communities DO 1.Plan for implementation of improvement theory (Force Field Analysis, Action Plan) 2. Implement research-based best practices improvement theory based on root causes according to the Action Plan 3. Monitor the implementation of research-based best practice/improvement theory to insure integrity and fidelity4. Assess student learning Act: 1.Standardize the implementation of research-based best practice (improvement theory) that improved student learning (revise the flow chart to reflect changes made to the system) 2. If improvement theory was unsuccessful continue the PDSA cycle (try another improvement theory based on the next identified root causes) Study: 1. Examine student assessment results (compare to baseline) 2. Assess the impact of research-based best practice/improvement theory on student achievement

  16. Elementary Schools • Common SMART goal for all schools: • By June 2009, all elementary classrooms in the Cedar Rapids Community School District will implement the District literacy program with integrity and fidelity as measured by classroom walkthroughs and teacher self-assessments.

Changes to ARDT… • In place of the traditional ARDT workshops that have occurred the last several years, resources will be devoted to the successful implementation of the District Literacy program. • Reading implementation teams from each school will meet 4 times during the year • Math & SEB teams will continue to use PDSA and SMART goals (but won’t attend District ARDT sessions)

  19. Suggested Team Members: • Principal • Reading Coach • 1 classroom teacher from every (K-5) grade • 1 Special Education teacher • *Title 1 teacher

  21. SIP Update Reminder… • Complete all sections and components • SMART Goals • Focus on skill, not a score • Include targets (and measures) • Action Plans • Reference where you are in PDSA • Be specific (critical few actions) • Professional Development • Tie PD to your action plan

Team Time… Plan the 2008-09 SIP: • Use information gathered today from: • the “SIP End of Year Review” • “SIP Rubric” • Notes from the SIP Goal Area discussions • Use the “organizing and planning for continuous improvement” worksheet • Update your school’s 08-09 SIP and discuss key changes/recommendations for next year
