  1. THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Textbook P. 62-63 ENERGY! What does every cell in your body need? The digestive system gets the “fuel” to your cells!

  2. 4 Main Processes • Ingestion – food taken into the body. • Digestion – broken down into smaller bits • Absorption – nutrients move into our blood. • Elimination – solid waste is removed. • It takes 20-30 hours from ingestion to elimination.

  3. Mouth • Digestion begins with chewing • Saliva moistens and begins to chemically break down food. • The tongue is also involved in pushing food around and …. tasting!

  4. Esophagus • Tube that pushes food towards the stomach using waves of muscle contractions • There is a flap of tissue called the epiglottis that makes sure when you swallow, the food does not go into your windpipe…..usually it works!

  5. Stomach • Muscles of the stomach churn and mix the food – physical digestion • Stomach acids also break down the food – chemical digestion

  6. duodenum - the first part of the small intestine; it is C-shaped

  7. Small Intestine • 6 meters long! Large surface area! • Nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream by diffusion

  8. Pancreas • Adds enzymes to the small intestine (chemical breakdown of food)

  9. Liver and Gall Bladder • Liver – makes a liquid called BILE • Gall Bladder (small sac) – stores the bile • Bile is “squirted” into the small intestine to break down fats.

  10. Large Intestine • 1.5 meters long • Receives undigested food from the small intestine • Water is removed (absorbed through the lining)

  11. Elimination • Rectum – compacts and stores feces before elimination through anus.
