How did we get here? • Ensure writing genres and studies are aligned throughout the district • Trying to make the most of the ISAT rubric • Break down the ISAT rubric so teachers (and students) know where to grow • 6+1 Traits is a well-researched, wealth of resources for teachers to use in assessment and instruction

  4. Rubric vs. Continuum Gradient with levels of mastery Different levels of ability in various areas Generate goals Used to formulate instruction • Points-based • All or nothing • Generate grades • After instruction

  5. What it Means for You as a Teacher! • 3 Times a year, unassisted, prompt • Assess writing using the continuum – highlight areas and date? • Look to see both student strengths and areas needing some additional work • Check out resources that might be helpful

  6. Let’s Give It A Shot • Use NEW continuum to assess ISAT student responses • Choose ONE student and the continuum to generate ideas for how you might help him/her.

  7. A Little Overwhelming, but... • Try honing in on just one piece of the puzzle for a short time • Be a scavenger of well-written text • Think about what’s developmentally appropriate for grade • Remember that it’s a WORK IN PROGRESS!
