Direct Inquiry

This science experiment explores how to make fresh water from salt water using evaporation. This step-by-step guide provides the materials needed and instructions to conduct the experiment. The results and observations are also explained, along with a suggestion to predict and test how to speed up evaporation.

  1. Direct Inquiry Explore How can you make fresh water from salt water?

  2. Materials Needed • Salt water and spoon • Small cup and bowl • Plastic wrap and tape • Marble

  3. What To Do • Step 1: Pour 5 spoonfuls of salt water into a bowl. Set a small cup in the middle of the bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap. Helpful Hint... Tape the plastic wrap to the bowl. The plastic wrap should not touch the small cup.

  4. What To Do Step 2: Place in sunlight for several hours. Step 3: Remove the marble, plastic wrap, and cup. Put the bowl and cup in a warm place. Let the water evaporate for about 3 days.

  5. What To Do Step 4: Observe the bottom of the cup.

  6. Explain Your Results • Communicate: What did you find in the bottom of each container? Explain. • Predict: Think about the variables that affect evaporation. How can you speed up evaporation? Describe how you could test your prediction.
