This study by Davis and Mares (1998) explored the effects of talk show viewing on adolescents' attitudes regarding social issues like teen sex, pregnancy, and runaways. Conducted with a non-random sample of 292 students from two public and one private high school in North Carolina, the research utilized questionnaires to assess viewing habits and perceived behaviors. Findings revealed that 46% of participants watched talk shows regularly, with Ricki Lake, Oprah, and Montel being the most popular. Heavy viewers were more likely to overestimate certain behaviors, but the study concluded that blanket condemnation of talk shows is unwarranted.
