  1. FIA Progress in Making Full Use of Phase 3 Data 2011 National FIA User Group Meeting Sacramento, CA March 8-10, 2011 Bill Burkman Southern Research Station FIA Program Manager http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  2. Objectives of Presentation • Brief introduction/overview to phase 3 measurements • An update on phase 3 measurements • Possible Future Actions • Discussion and questions http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  3. Introduction to Phase 3 Measurements • Considered “forest health indicators” • One out of every 16 phase 2 plots is also a phase 3 plot • Generally collected during the months of June, July, and August • The number of measurements/variables is greater than on phase 2 plots http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  4. Phase 3 Indicators/Measurements • Crown Condition and Health • Lichen Diversity • Understory VegetationStructure and Diversity • Soils • Down Woody Material • Ozone (separate sampling grid) http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  5. Generalized Plot Layout http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  6. An Update on Phase 3 Measurements • Each indicator group has a FS Gen. Tech. Rep. describing data collection, estimation, processing, and output format in print • Phase 3 data is available through FIA DataMart http://199.128.173.17/fiadb4-downloads/datamart.html • Cannot use on-line query tools with phase 3 data • Phase 3 data has been utilized in various 5-year reports, other FS documents, journal articles, etc. • Status report on phase indicators has been published Woodall, C.W. and others. 2010. Status and future of the forest health indicators program of the USA. Environ. Mon. and Assess. Published on-line: http://www.springerlink.com/content/7167550w31230247/fulltext.pdf http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  7. Phase 3 Reporting Task Team Status • Objective: make P3 data and reports available through our online reporting tools. • Began work in January 2011. • Initial discussions have focused on the level of reporting desired, review of the P3 core tables, appropriate stratifications, needed evaluations and attributes, etc. • Some work for DWM has been accomplished already. Intent is to start with DWM, work through the process, and then based on what we learn repeat the process with the remaining indicators. • Some core P3 tables by state are posted as drafts to FIA DataMart (link below). Some tables lack some footnotes and measurement unit labels. http://199.128.173.17/fiadb4-downloads/P3_Reports/P3Drafts.html http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  8. Phase 3 Possible Future Actions??? • Re-evaluate of phase 3 measurements in terms of aligning with FIA/FS/partners mission areas and products or outputs provided. http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  9. Relationship Between Indicators/Measures and Products/Outputs Indicator or Measure Product or Output Wood Supply Tree Volume including change Forest Area including change Forest Area Change Tree Mortality Forest Industry Production Bio-energy from Wood Forest Owner Information Carbon Inventory Tree Crowns Tree Damage Forest Health Ozone Bio-indicator Damage Air Quality Lichen Species Diversity Soil Carbon Inventory Bio-diversity Soil pH, CEC, Exch. 10. Phase 3 Possible Future Actions??? • Re-evaluate of phase 3 measurements in terms of aligning with FIA/FS/partners mission areas and products or outputs provided. • Move phase 3 indicators to phase 2 versions. National field guide 6.0 includes “lite” versions of DWM and understory vegetation. http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  11. The Three Phases of FIA http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  12. Phase 3 Possible Future Actions??? • Re-evaluate of phase 3 measurements in terms of aligning with FIA/FS/partners mission areas and products or outputs provided. • Move phase 3 indicators to phase 2 versions. National field guide 6.0 includes “lite” versions of DWM and understory vegetation. “More plots/less measurements” • Move all/some of phase 3 measurements to core optional from core. http://fia.fs.fed.us/

  13. Phase 3 Possible Future Actions??? • Re-evaluate of phase 3 measurements in terms of aligning with FIA/FS/partners mission areas and products or outputs provided. • Re-evaluate the intensity plots of phase 3 measurements with collected – move phase 3 indicators to phase 2 versions. National field guide 6.0 includes “lite” versions of DWM and understory vegetation. “More plots/less measurements” • Move all/some of phase 3 measurements to core optional from core. • Some combination of all of the above. http://fia.fs.fed.us/
