  2. SECNAV directed energy goals: • 50% of energy from alternative sources by 2020 • 50% of bases will be net-zero energy by 2020 • Navy will sail green carrier strike group by 2016 • Cut 50% in vehicle petroleum by 2015 • Include energy efficiency in contract award criteria immediately

  3. Commissioned in 1994, Naval Station Everett is the Navy’s newest baseand the strategic homeport for a Carrier Strike Group

Target 3: The Great Green Fleet•2012/2016: Demonstrate and sail green CSG • •Current Capability: • –Nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, conventional DDG • • Future Requirements: • –Hybrid electric ships running on biofuels to replace current DESRON 9 DDG/FFG ships. • •Options: • –Senior Navy leadership decision to select NSE as homeport to the Great Green Fleet.

  5. Target 4: Alternative-Fueled Vehicles•2015: Cut 50% in vehicle petroleum by 2015 • NSE began replacing utility vehicles with all-electric models in 1999. By 2009, 100% of NSE light transportation needs were met with 39 all-electric vehicles. • In 2009, NSE acquired 10 E85 passenger/ utility vehicles and 15 electric vehicles. • 80% of GSA-owned vehicles operate exclusively on E85 fuel. • 100% of Navy buses run on biodiesel fuel.

  9. 80 % U.S. ground convoys moving in Afghanistan are to ship fuel to forward operating bases—1,100 of were attacked in 2010 alone • DoD’s strategy paper, “Energy for the Warfighter: Opertations Energy Strategy” ways to save energy and reduce dependence on oil • DoD spends $15 billion a year on energy--80% of federal government's total energy use • DoD spends 225% more on fuel than it did in 2001 • The strategy paper concludes: “the realities of global oil markets mean a disruption of oil supplies is plausible and increasingly likely in the coming decades."

DOE , the Navy and the Department of Agriculture issued an MOU in July to spend $510 million to create advanced drop-in biofuels to power DoD and private sector transportation throughout America. Locally, ImperiumRenewables, LanzaTech, Boeing, PNNL and the Port of Seattle will receive up to $4 million to develop renewable jet fuel
