  2. Opener What two new belief systems gave rise to ideas of European superiority and “justified” the Scramble for Africa? What three main groups clashed for power in South Africa?   3. The White Man’s Burden:(Summarize in your notes!) A phrase used to justify European imperialism in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries; it is the title of a poem by Rudyard Kipling. The phrase implies that imperialism was motivated by a high-minded desire of whites to uplift people of color.

African Resistance • Africans Confront Imperialism • Broad resistance, but Europeans have superior weapons • Unsuccessful Movements (most notable) • Algeria fights the French for 50 years • German East Africa resistance results in 75,000 deaths • Successful Movements • Ethiopia under Emperor Menelik II • Plays Europeans against each other • Stockpiles modern weapons • Defeats Italy and remains independent

Legacy of Imperialism • Negative Effects • Africans lose land and independence • Many lives lost • Traditional cultures breakdown • Political division of Africa created problems that continue today • Positive Effects • Reduces local fighting • Sanitation improves • Hospitals and schools created • Technology brings economic growth
