  2. Overview • WellSpan Health: Community Health and Wellness Department • 2012 Needs Assessment: Only 3% of York County adults eat recommended amount of vegetables per day (3 cups) • Goal of WellSpan: Increase vegetable consumption to decrease health problems and healthcare costs

  3. How can WellSpan Reach Their Goal? • Community outreach (my project ): A vegetable gardening and information class for parents and children • Identify barriers to eating vegetables through surveys

  4. Goal of Project: • To introduce parents and children to a vegetable they may not be familiar with by teaching them how to plant small, cost effective container gardens in hopes of peaking their interest in a.) gardening, and b.) buying more of the chosen vegetable. They will leave the class with greater knowledge about the chosen vegetable regarding health benefits, how to buy and store the vegetable, and ways to cook/prepare it.

  6. Development • Early Head Start of York • Focused on “Leafy Greens” (spinach and lettuce) and indoor, cost-effective container gardening • Curriculum and class materials • Grew my own gardens

  7. Delivery and Evaluation • Presented class on April 14th • 10-12 parents,10-12 children (ages 1-3) and 3-5 EHS staff • Discussion of “Leafy Greens” • In-class gardening • Surveys • Families were sent home with supporting materials

Pilot Program Tool-Kit:How Did WellSpan Benefit? • Created a Pilot Program “tool-kit” based on the development, delivery, and evaluation. • Given to WellSpan Community Health and Wellness for future use. • Tool-kit lists all details of class curriculum, resources utilized, materials needed, and modifiers based on chosen audience. Development (the hard part) is finished – all they need to do is deliver!
