Chromolithography • Is a method of making multi colored prints • This type of color printing stemmed from the process of lithography • Lithography is a method for printing using stone or metal with a smooth surface and can be used to print text and artwork on paper • Chromo is used to reproduce photographs • Chromolithography replaced coloring prints by hand and served as a real replica of a real painting

Jules Cheret • Born in 1836, died 1932 • Studied lithography for 7 years • He was famous for creating vivid poster ads for music halls, the olympia, the folies, theatre de l’opera, etc… • He became a hit and expanded his business to providing advertisements for the plays of touring troupes, municipal festival, beverages and liquor, perfume, soaps and added major advertising forces such as railroad companies and manufacturing business • His work became more popular and his large posters displayed modesty free spirited females and found a larger audience • Freed the woman from Paris

  4. Louis John Rhead • He was born in 1857, died 1926 • Was an English-born American artist, illustrator, author, and angler. • Louis’s father George W. Rhead worked in pottery industry and he founded Fenton School of art • Louis attended his fathers art classes as a child • Louis demonstrated expediential talent at age 13, his father sent him to Paris, France • At age 24 Louis was offered a position as Art Director for the US publishing firm of D. Appleton in New York City • 1890 Louis became a prominent poster artist. • Late 1890’s the popularity of poster declined and turned his skills to book illustration • 5 years after being in the US he started fishing for trout and became interested in angling art

  5. Edward Penfield(1866-1925) • Born 2 June 1866 in Brooklyn, New York • Edward Penfield, has been called the “originator of the poster in America

More Edward Penfield • First published work was in Harper’s Weekly in 1891. • In his early works, his illustrations were in ink and watercolor. • He’s known for his trademark linework and use of broad tonal areas. • His influences: • Composition and casual poses found in Japanese prints • the hand-craftsmanship of the Arts and Crafts movement • impressionism of Parisian posters

  7. MoreEDWARD PENFIELD His Career: • He began a series of monthly images for Harper's magazine • Credited with bringing abstraction to commercial art through his boldly simplified shapes. • Other magazines included • Life • Ladies' Home Journal • The Saturday Evening Post and more

  8. Will H. Bradley • One of the leading American poster artists of the turn of the century • Nicknamed the "Dean of American Designers", he was the highest paid American artist of the early 20th century. • He was an illustrator, art editor, and poster artist

Bradley • Born in Boston in 1868 • Bradley received his first formal artistic education from his father, a cartoonist • In the 1890s he became an independent designer, working for Harper's and other magazines. • In 1915 he began working for the newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, acting as art supervisor to a film series produced by Hearst. • By 1920 he was head art supervisor of the Hearst magazines and newspapers. In 1954, • Bradley was awarded a gold medal by the American Institute of Graphic Arts.

Bradley • Will Bradley's posters compare favorably with the best of the French and English poster designers of his generation. • Bradley developed his own style of bold and elegant poster design relying on sharp contrasts of black and white for strong visual impact. • He died at the age of ninety-four in Short Hills, New Jersey.

  11. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec 1864-1901 • Toulouse-Lautrec was born in France in 1864. • He suffered from a genetic condition that prevented his bones from healing properly. • He was only 4 1/2 feet tall. • He died at the age of 36.

  12. More Toulouse Lautrec • Deeply influenced by Japanese woodblock prints • The nightlife of Montmartre in Paris inspired his works • Toulouse Lautrec not only painted the world of brothels, but was a frequent guest himself.

  13. More Toulouse-Lautrec • He spent many hours at a crowded nightclub table making swift sketches. • The next morning in his studio he would expand the sketches into bright-colored paintings. • Many of his lithographs were of singers and performers he knew at the nightclub.

And More Toulouse-LautrecLithographs • He made lithographs for posters, theater billboards and illustrations for magazines. • He created his first lithograph in 1891. • His 500 and 3,000 copies of posters are all unnumbered and unsigned. • Later he had his initials HT or a stamp mark engraved on stone to sign with. • Toulouse-Lautrec posters are rarely on view in galleries because of the hazards posed by extended exposure to light and air
