  2. What is a Negative Relationship? • Negative relationship: one that is neither healthy, satisfying, nor successful for one or both people involved • Threatens a person’s physical and/or emotional well being • Often involve some level of abuse • Name calling, put downs, physical violence, etc.

  3. Ending a Negative Relationship • You would think someone would want to end this kind of a relationship • Can be hard if it is a family member or close friend • Financial Dependence • First step to ending a physically abusive relationship is to get away from the abuser • Can be hard for children & younger people

  4. Ending a Negative Relationship • A plan should be formed to get away from abuser to help avoid panic in a moment of crisis • Leave important items with a friend so they can be picked up after the “escape” • A police report should be filed ASAP • Medical care should be obtained

  5. Ending a Negative Relationship • Emotionally abusive relationships are not life threatening • Must be ended to preserve one’s well-being • Getting away from the abuser is the first step • Not all negative relationships end unhappily • Counseling can help people change negative patterns

Recovering from a Negative Relationship • Takes time (sometimes time alone) • Take time to look back & reflect • Get involved in group activities • Don’t need too much time alone • Not all relationships are negative • Support from friends & family can help one heal • Lasting scars • Can be hard to build new relationships • Self esteem has been damaged

  7. Negative Peer Pressure • Peer pressure: the influence a person’s peers have on him/her • Can be positive or negative • Negative peer pressure can lead to negative relationships
