Important facts about Louis Armstrong(1900-1971) • Louis Armstrong was born on July 4, 1900 in a back-of-town part of New Orleans. • Armstrong’s first instrument was a cigar box guitar. • Armstrong was arrested and sent to Waif’s Home for a year’s discipline for shooting a gun. • Armstrong married Daisy Parker, his childhood sweetheart. He divorced her later. • Armstrong later married Lilian Harden the piano player and the arranger of the band Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band. • Louis Armstrong’s nickname was Satchmo because he had a wide smile. • Armstrong’s band was renamed Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra and they continued to tour for ten years. • A white radio announcer said that he would not tell black people about Louis Armstrong’s concert. This was the first time that he was rejected because of his race. • Louis Armstrong had health problems, but still recorded songs. • Louis Armstrong died at his house in New York, July 6, 1971.
