  1. Warm Up: 4/21 • 1. What are stereotypes people may have when they first see you? • 2. How are stereotypes created?

  2. Objective and DOL Objective DOL • SWBAT explain and create fallacies for unit 11 • Create one example for each of the following fallacies: • Rewrite History • Spin, Spin, Spin • Talk Double Talk • Treat Abstract Words and Symbols as if they were a real thing • Throw in a Red Herring

Rewrite History (Have it your way) • In telling a story about the past, you distort the past in whatever ways you feel you can get away with • Often justified by love of country • Ex: We call it the Vietnam War, They call it the War of American Atrocities • “Manifest Destiny” • Germans not mentioning the Holocaust much in history books

  4. Spin, Spin, Spin • This occurs when a person (or news source) presents information with a bias, or a “spin”. • Blocks opposing viewpoints • Positively represents own viewpoint • Most people have given up on getting objective facts, and settle for whichever outlet gives a spin they prefer • Can be avoided by seeking out a different source on the topic • What is an example of this fallacy from this semester watching media? Media is able to alter our perception by skewing, or spinning, facts.

  5. Talk Double Talk • We often do what we accuse our opponents of doing. To not sound bad, we use a positive word when we do it, and a negative word when opponents do it. • Ex: we used to have a “war department”, it is now the “defense department” • Why would we do this? • Pair-Share: What are other examples? • Freedom fighters vs terrorists • Holding centers vs concentration camps • Religious vs fanatic • Determined vs pig headed or stubborn • Clever vs cunning • Brave and courageous vs traitor

  6. Treat Abstract Words and Symbols as if They Were Real Things • Giving an abstract idea or inanimate object a life of its own by pairing it with an action verb • Examples: • Freedom supports us • Democracy calls • The flag marches on • Justice insists that we… • Science says…

  7. Throw in a Red Herring • When one throws in an irrelevant (but emotionally loaded) issue that will distract from the opponent’s reasoning. • Example: Oceans are dying because of human activity. What we really need to concern ourselves with is government regulation in industry, and all the jobs that will be lost if beurocratic legislation continues to grow.

  8. DOL • To show your understanding, create an original example or scenario depicting each of the fallacies we covered today
