  2. Objective: • Know the Proper terms to use when talking about horses. • Be able to recognize some of the different color patterns of horses.

  3. Mare • Female horse • Usually after having an offspring.

  4. Filly • Young female horse

  5. Brood Mare • Mare that is used strictly for breeding

  6. Stallion • Male horse • STUD

  7. Colt • Young male horse

  8. Gelding • Castrated Male Horse

  9. Foal • Young Horse male or female

  10. Hand • Unit of measurement for horses • 4 inches

  11. Pony • A breed of horse that is under 14.2 hands.

  12. Light Horse • Most horses, riding size. • Above 14.2 hands • 800 – 1200 lbs.

  13. Draft Horse • Work horses • Above 14 hands • 1100 – 2500 lbs
