  1. Discover America Up Close July 18 – August 10, 2013

What is Discover AmericaUp Close? • Discover America Up Close is offered by the Center for International Programs and Activities at Shawnee State University • Language immersion “24/7” for improved oral and written communication skill development • Study small town and urban cultural development

  3. Methodology and Curriculum • The overriding theme focuses on intensive English skill development and an exploration of historical, cultural, and environmental influences affecting development in the Appalachian region of Ohio • Instructional methods will include: • Sessions on writing technique and grammar • Written reflections • Class participation and interactions with culture mates, peers, and instructors • Student presentations on higher education topics of interest

  4. Activities • Curriculum enables students to explore the similarities and differences between universities in China and the U.S. • Students earn 4 semester hours college credit for 60 hours academic instruction • Students live in modern, apartment style university housing with Wi-Fi access

Activities (cont.) • Unique travel opportunities including trip to Columbus, the capital of Ohio, to visit the Statehouse and The Ohio State University, the second largest institution of higher education in America • Other weekend trips to experience diverse cultures and tour international companies and 3 world renowned universities

  6. Activities (cont.) • Four-day cultural excursion to visit Washington, D.C.: • the Smithsonian Institution • the National Museum of the American Indian • John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts • Washington Monument • Georgetown University and other important sites in the nation’s capital

  7. Expenses • $5500 Includes*: • Tuition for 4 semester credits • Weekend travel costs (includes lodging and food) • On campus housing • Course materials • Recommend $600-800 for personal spending and on campus meals *Note: airfare to U.S. -notincluded

  8. Important Dates • July 18 • Arrive in U.S. • Discover America Up Close begins • July 19,20 • Intercultural communications workshop • Party on the farm with international students • July 21,22 • Columbus Trip (homestay, tour The Ohio State University and Statehouse) • July 23 • Classes Begin

Important Dates (cont.) • July 27,28 • Cincinnati Trip (Amish community, Underground Railroad-Freedom Center, University tour, etc.) • August 2 • Community Service Day with culture mates • August 3,4 • Eco-tourism (outdoor adventure): zip-line or high ropes, Serpent Mound, camping, etc. • August 7,8,9,10 • Cultural Excursion to Washington, D.C. • Return to China
