Phanuphak2 1Wayne State University, USA 2HIVNAT & Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre, Thailand 3City University of New York, USA 4Phramongkutklao College of Medicine, Thailand Motivational Interviewing (MI) Counseling style that guides an individual to resolve ambivalence about behavior change and to strengthen motivation for change.1 Healthy Choices Study • 4-session MI-based intervention improved condom use, alcohol use, plasma HIV viral loads, and depression in HIV+ US youth.2, 3 • The intervention was acceptable for HIV+ youth in Thailand, with minimal modification needed.4 Study Methods Subjects: 16-25 year-old HIV+ Thai persons Randomization: • 4-session Healthy Choices Sexual risk, alcohol, adherence • 4-session Health Education (Control) Assessments: Baseline, 1 month, 6 months Sexual acts Alcohol use Plasma HIV viral loads Mental health scores 12 wk • Miller WR, Rollnick S.   2. Results Total subjects=108. 74 were MSM. MSM: Healthy Choices (N=37)vs Control (N=37) *p<0.05

Conclusions • Healthy Choices, an MI intervention, showed potentials in reducing anal sex and sex with HIV-negative or unknown partners among HIV+ young Thai MSM in this pilot study. • Improvement in mental health was noted in HIV+ young Thai MSM who received Healthy Choices. • Study retention rate was significantly higher in Healthy Choices group than in Control group. • Study limitation: High rate of loss to follow-up in Control group.
