Collective Impact: S4C’s Collaborative Approach to Better Outcomes • Independent collaboration of public education providers serving Santa Cruz County • Membership • Colleges: Cabrillo, CSUMB, UCSC • School Districts: Bonny Doon, Happy Valley, Live Oak, Mountain, Pacific, Pajaro Valley, San Lorenzo Valley, Santa Cruz City, Scotts Valley, Soquel Union • Other Educational: SCCOE Alternative Education, ROP, Public Charters • HQ at SCCOE, funded by grants and memberships 3

  4. Coming Attractions • College Awareness Week 10/27 - 11/3 • Board resolutions, school site activities • Culminates with C&C Night @ Cabrillo • Big Meeting 9/12 • Fall Collaboratives, dates TBD • English, math, data, counselors, CTE, Work-based learning 4

  5. AB790 Linked Learning Grant • $80K planning grant, to prepare for development of pathways • Provided technical support and training from ConnectEd • District LL Director training sessions • November 2013 LL Orientation • Support for development of our Career Pathways Trust application 5

Career Pathways Trust • $6M/4-year request for 33 pathways in 5 categories, countywide • Approach: Use LL approach to improve student outcomes • Career-themed core • Contextualized A-G academics • Integrated student supports • Work-based learning • Pathways selected on • Labor market information • Facilities availability • Capacity to teach • Pathways had multiple “offramps” 6

  7. CPT Score: 103/180 • Feedback gathered from multiple sources • This was a workforce development grant, not an education grant • All about preparing students for jobs • High school graduate, certificate, 2-year degree • high demand, high wage • Employers deeply engaged and committed 7

S4C Recommended Approach • Continue strategic direction toward pathways • Tailor our next CPT application to score higher • Strengthen employer commitment • Clarify county labor market structure (82% of employment in firms <10 employees) • 3 industry-driven, K-14 pathways • Countywide leveraged student services and work-based learning • Detailed, site-level activities and budgets 8
