  1. Sequence The Order in Which Things Happen

  2. Sequence • Sequence tells the order things happen in. • Look for clue words as you read. Some clue words are: *first *second *next *then *last *before *after *finally

  3. Sequence • Some other key words could be time, the time of day, days of the week, or even months. • Some more clue words are: *1:00 *3:30 *Tuesday *at night *Friday *April *December *in the morning

  4. Lets review what we know about sequence… • Sequence is the order in which things happen • It tells us when something happened • In the beginning, middle, or end • Some key words are: first, second, third, in the morning, in the afternoon, Tuesday, Wednesday, 2:45, December

  5. Lets learn more about Sequence Day 1 Day 2 Day 4 Day 3

  6. Read this story about Iris. As you read think about the order in which things happen in the story. My cousin Juan broke his arm. He was sad. So, I made him a special card. First, I got a piece of paper and some crayons. Then, I drew a picture of the sun and a rainbow. Last, I wrote “Get well soon” in the middle of the sun. Think about it… What did Iris do first? Then what did she do? What was the last thing Iris did?

  7. This is the order things happened in the story… First, I got a piece of paper and some crayons. Then, I drew a picture of the sun and a rainbow. Last, I wrote “get well soon” in the middle of the sun. My cousin Juan broke his arm. He was sad. So, I made him a special card. First, I got a piece of paper and some crayons. Then, I drew a picture of the sun and a rainbow. Last, I wrote “Get well soon” in the middle of the sun.

  8. Read the story, on page 23, that Robert wrote about a school trip to yourself as I read aloud. As you read think about what happens first, second, and so on. Answer questions 1 and 2. April 12 Today our class went to a farm. We saw many animals. There were chickens and cows in a field. There were horses and goats in the barn. A few pigs rolled in the mud. First we talked to Mr. Ortiz. He is the owner of the farm. He told us all about the animals on the farm. Next, he showed us How to milk a cow. Then he let us feed the chickens. When it was time to leave, one of the goats got loose. The goat ran out into the field. Mr. Ortiz tried to catch him, but the goat was fast. Soon, Mr. Ortiz and the goat were running in circles. We all laughed. Mr. Ortiz caught him and brought him back to the barn. Then we thanked Mr. Ortiz for a fun day.

  9. How did you do? • What did the class do first? • They fed chickens • They thanked Mr. Ortiz. • They talked to Mr. Ortiz • Which clue word tells what the class did second? • first • next • then

  10. Congratulations! You Got It Right!!You Really Know Sequence

  11. Try Again...

  12. Sequence Without Sequence Words? • Sometimes there are no clue words in a story. Think about the beginning, middle and end of the story. This will help you understand the order in which things happen. • Look for numbers that tell order. Sometimes, directions or lists have numbers that tell the order in which things are done. Let’s take a look at Kim’s list…

  13. Read the list that Kim made on page 24, as I read aloud. As you read, ask yourself, “What will Kim do first? What will Kim do next? Things to Do When I Get Home 1. Read for 20 minutes 2. Feed My Fish 3. Have a Snack 4. Clean my room 5. Take Spike for a walk 6. Have dinner 7. Study new spelling words 8. Go to bed

  14. Question Time! Your Task: After reading the list Kim made, answer questions 3 and 4 on page 24. Remember to go back into the story to help you remember what Kim has to do when she gets home. When you are done: Make a list of what you will do when you get out of school today.

  15. Let’s recap: • Sequence tells us the order things happen in. • In a story, Sequence words are usually used to tell us the order • If there are no sequence words we are going to think about what happened in the beginning, middle and end of a story. • We can also find sequence by reading a numbered list • Lets see how we can turn a story with sequence words in it, into a list of steps to follow!

  16. Sometimes, we can use a list of steps to help us understand how to do something. • To help us understand how to do something, or to understand how someone else does something, we can take information out of a story and determine the steps we need to follow. On the next page you will read a story telling us about Dave washing his dog. We are going to read it together and figure out what steps Dave follows to wash his dog correctly.

  17. Read this story about Dave. What steps does Dave need to follow to give his dog a bath? Dave loved giving his dog a bath. He gave him a bath once a week. Dave had to follow certain steps when washing his dog. First, he had to fill the bathtub with warm water. Then, he picked up his dog and put him in the bath tub. After that, he rubbed shampoo all over his dog. Next, he washed off all the shampoo. Finally, Dave took his dog out of the tub and dried him with a towel.

  18. Steps to Wash a Dog Step 1- Fill the bathtub with warm water Step 2- Pick up the dog and put him in the bathtub Step 3- Rub shampoo all over the dog Step 4- Wash off all the shampoo Step 5- Take the dog out of the tub and dry with a towel Dave loved giving his dog a bath.

  19. Your Task: Now it’s your turn to make a list of steps someone could follow to: *Get ready for school *Ride a bike *Make a sandwich *Bake a cake *Go on the internet *Play a game *Or anything else you can tell someone how to do!

  20. “Sequence in Action” • Let’s read the book “It’s Pumpkin Time” by Zoe Hall. In this story we will see the sequence of how a pumpkin grows. As I am reading, listen for the different things that happen to a pumpkin from the time it is a seed until it grows into a big pumpkin.

  21. How does it happen? Let’s discuss and chart the order in which a pumpkin grows from a seed to a big pumpkin. Ask yourself questions like: What happens first? What happens next? What happens after that?

  22. Your Task: *Now that we figured out what happens to a pumpkin as it grow from a seed into a pumpkin, its your turn to write a book. *Using sequence words, retell how a pumpkin grows on the special “pumpkin paper” Illustrate the steps as you write them. Here’s a sample:

  23. From Seed to Pumpkin First, pumpkin seeds are planted… Then, the seeds grow roots… Next, the tiny shoots grow into vines… Remember this is just a sample, you are going to include all the steps, add more details and don’t forget the illustrations!
