  2. What is sequence? • Everything in life requires sequence. It is basically the order in which things work or the order in which we do things. • Think of your life: • What do you do when you FIRST get up in the morning? • What do you do right before you go to bed at night? • Doesn’t your life have sequence?

  7. Underline the signal words In the beginning, the girls were just talking while they waited for the bus. Suddenly a car pulled up and blew its horn loudly. Next, a woman jumped out with her hair flying. At the same time, the driver put the car in park and stepped into the street. When he did this, cars began stopping. Next, the bus arrived and joined the line of stopped cars. Following that, the police arrived. Soon they had the woman calmed down. Then they asked the driver to move his car out of the way. When the street was clear, the line of cars moved on. Subsequently, the girls got on the bus. The last thing they saw was a happy dog jump into the arms of the woman.

Subsequently, the girls got on the bus. The last thing they saw was a happy dog jump into the arms of the woman.

Types of Sequence • Chronological – order in time (first, second, third) • Deductive Order – start with the most important and build down to the least important. • Inductive Order – start with least important and build to the most important. • Spatial Order – order arranged in view (space). • Cause and Effect – order in which you describe what caused something else to happen.

  10. Identify the type of order this paragraph uses. When you first walk into my room, you will see a large recliner, torn and ratty in the far right corner of the room. When you turn to your left, you’ll see a twin-size bed without fitted sheets, blankets tossed around like garbage. Straight ahead, in the center of my room you will see my greatest pride and joy – my electric guitar!

Which sentence best describes the type of order used in the passage? • The passage uses chronological order because it describes what the narrator does first, second, and third • The passage uses spatial order because it describes the placement of items in space. • The passage uses inductive order because it mentions the least important things first and leaves the most important to the end.

  12. Answer B – although the author does seem to guide us by describing the least appealing items first and building to the most appealing item, (at the end) he is describing where things are based on their placement in space.

  25. Writing Opportunity! • Create a manual for your teacher on how to use something they probably do not know how to use. You should be very specific and show all the steps in using the device. Remember, the person you are instructing KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT IT!!! • Suggestions: how to use an iPod, how to text, etc.
