This document outlines the work plans and activities for FY06 at Sandia National Laboratories, focusing on projects relevant to ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor). The proposed budget includes support for base PFC technology development, ITER-related R&D, and preparation for Module 18 activities. It provides detailed information on personnel involved, program activities, and specific research objectives such as developing diagnostics, measuring material compatibility, and high heat flux testing. This strategic plan aims to enhance capabilities for advancing fusion energy technologies.

Work Plans for FY06 Sandia National Laboratories Michael Ulrickson Presented at PFC Technology Meeting May 9-11, 2005 At PPPL Sandia is a multiprogram laboratory operated by Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company, for the United States Department of Energy under contract DE-AC04-94AL85000.
Assumptions • Budget Assumption: $1300K base + $1200K ITER Support (base) +$600K ITER Prep. + TBD ITER Project • Assumptions: • Base means basic PFC technology development with little or no direct ITER relevance • ITER support (base) means using base program capability to perform R&D directly relevant to ITER • ITER preparation means conceptual design of module 18 and preparation for the project • ITER Project will be only Module 18 activities
Outline • Personnel supported • Base program activities for FY06 • ITER support (Base) activities for FY06 • ITER preparation activities for FY06.
Personnel Supported • At Albuquerque (M. Ulrickson, R. Nygren, T. Tanaka, D. Youchison, W. Wampler, J. McDonald, T. Lutz, F. Bauer, K. Troncosa, R. Yellowrobe) • J. Watkins is funded by DIII-D project • Note tasks in ABQ will be blue • At California: (R. Causey, R. Bastasz, D. Cowgil, D. Buchenauer,Chris Kunz) • Not full time • Note tasks in Ca will be green
Base Program Activities for FY06 • Develop new diagnostics for HHF testing • Fiber optic temperature sensors • Heat flux gauges • Testing of He cooled refractory heat sinks up to 600C and thermal modeling of results (related to some SBIR) • Collaborate with C-Mod on W divertor tile development and testing. (lamella vs. rods) • Measure heat removal capacity of liquid Li • Perform experiments on He retention in Ga (Li)
Base Program Activities for FY06 (II) • Complete modeling of He retention in liquids • Determine melt layer stability on NSTX relevant materials • DiMES support (sample preparation, analysis) • Use nuclear reaction analysis to measure carbon transport in DIII-D Round II
ITER support (Base) activities for FY06 • Conduct research on NDE techniques for Be/Cu joints (flaw size determination, ultrasound vs. thermal) • Conduct ELM testing on W rods on EB-1200 (damage limits, melting threshold, etc.) • Measure limits on W/Be compatibility (melting points, evaporation, temperature effects) • Use TPE to measure tritium retention in W/Be mixed materials
ITER preparation activities for FY06 • Flow test design options for the ITER shield block • Flow distribution, pressure drop, etc. • Conduct high heat flux testing of Be/Cu prototypes for first wall application • Brazing or HIPping using Ti or AlBemet interlayers • Plasma Spray • Or …
Upgrades Needed ($900K) • Upgrade and refurbishment of hot water NDT loop (ITER) • Fast automated valves for rapid cycling • Upgraded vacuum pumps for EB-1200 to improve throughput (ITER) • Repair rate of existing pumps is high • High Pressure Flow loop upgrade and recertification (ITER) • Must be done every 10 years (due 06) • Spectrometer for TPE (ITER) • Measure Be content in plasma
