2. The Logans The Logan family consists of Cassie, Stacey (a boy), Little Man, and Christopher-John, Papa, Mama, and Big Ma. Their Uncle Hammer comes to visit at times also. Cassie is the only girl in the family, but she doesnt mind. Her Papa works on the railroad and she only sees him in the winter. Her mom is the teacher of the 7th grade.
3. Once, while they where walking on the road, Staceys friend, T.J. told them about a burning. Apparently, the Wallace's, owners of a store, chased two black people. When they tried to escape at their uncles the Wallace's burned the uncle, Mr. Berry.
4. The 1st and 4th graders are in the same room so Little Man and Cassie are in the same room. One day at school their teacher, Mrs. Crocker, gave out books for the children. When Little Man got his book he looked at the front inside cover, and for some reason threw the book on the floor and stomped on it! Cassie looked in her book she saw the reason Little Man stomped on the book!
5. ? The Reason ?
In the front cover of the book it had a graph. It said 1922, book condition: New, Race of student: white, etc. till it said 1933, book condition: Very poor , race of student: nigra. Cassie showed Mrs. Crocker the book but she didnt listen. So Cassie and Little Man turned in their books and got whippings.
6. The Bus Plan Every morning while the Logans are walking to school the white childrens school bus splashes them with water from mud puddles. Little Man was the most annoyed. Stacey thought of a plan to make a water ditch. At lunch time, they dug a ditch from the gully on the side road and made a ditch, and still made it look like the side had gave way from all the water there.
7. What Happened After school when the bus came the kids ducked down in a bush to watch what was going to happen. When the bus came, it sped up to the puddle. When they went through it the white kids screamed in joy. BUT the bus got stuck in the ditch the children had dug! Mr. Grimer, the bus driver, looked and saw the bus wasnt going to be driving for some time. The white kids had to walk home in the rain. That night the Logan children couldnt stop laughing while they did their homework!
8. That night the night men came. A man came to tell the family that they were coming. The children got sent to bed early. But they eavesdropped in the boys room. In the middle of the night Cassie woke up and heard some scuttling. She went outside and found the dog. Then she had to hide because the nightmen came but they just looked at the house and left .
9. T.J the Cheater Stacey and T.J. are in Staceys Moms class. There was a test day on which T.J. was cheating. When Stacey saw T.J. cheating he snatched the sheet. His mom was coming down the row and saw him with the sheet. Stacey didnt tell on T.J., so he got a whipping in front of the class. By his mom!
10. The Wallaces After school T.J. ran to the Wallaces store with a couple of kids. Little Willie told Stacey hed gone to the Wallace store. Mama had told them not to go there, but Stacey still ran after T. J. They tussled there, but then Mr. Morrison, a man who lost his job on the railroad and was living with the Logans, came and got them. He said they would have to tell their mom what happened.
11. One day Cassie, Stacey, and T.J. went with Big Ma to a Farmers Market. Cassie had been nagging to go to one for some time. T.J. went because his mom had a list of stuff to get. Later when Big Ma went to see Mr. Jamison, T.J., Stacey, and Cassie went to shop for T.J.s list. The store keeper ignored them and helped the white folk. Cassie got mad, told off the storekeeper, and got kicked out. When they went to Big Ma, Cassie ran into Lillian Jean. Lillian told Cassie to apologize. When she didnt Lillians dad came and pushed Cassie. Big Ma came and made Cassie apologize. Cassie was mad after that.
12. The Coat When Uncle Hammer came to visit, the family went to a festival. Stacey came out with his coat, to small for him and tattered, Uncle Hammer gave him an early Christmas present. A new coat! But when T.J. saw the coat, he told Stacey it made him look like a fat preacher. T.J. told Stacey to let him keep the coat until Stacey grew into it. Stacey gave the coat to T.J. When Mama said she would mend it, Stacey didnt have it. Uncle Hammer let T.J. keep the coat.
13. CHRISTMAS It Christmas!!! They all got books. Cassie got The Three Musketeers, Stacey got The Count of Monte Cristo, and Little Man and Christopher-John got 2 volumes of Aesops Fables. A person had given Papa these books. They also got licorice, oranges, and bananas. Jeremy, Lillians brother, also comes over and gives the family some nuts.
14. Mamas fired! T.J. spilled the beans. Little Willie told the Logans T.J. gone told them Wallaces about how their Mama purposely failed T.J. and not teaching the right thing. So Mr. Granger, the landowner, and the Wallaces came and saw she was teaching slavery and not the books. After failing T.J. started hanging with bad boys R.W. and Melvin.
15. Cassie starts to be nice to Lillian but its just a trick. Lillian takes the bait and waits for Cassie and the others with her brother Jeremy to walk to school. Cassie holds Lillians books and acts nice to her. But one day Cassie tricks Lillian into the woods and makes her apologize for every thing. Lillian thought Cassie was a such nice girl.
16. Papas Hurt! It was a dark stormy night when Stacey, Mr. Morrison, and Papa come home. The carriage broke a tire. Papa went out to try to mend it. A truck came buy and some one shot at Papa and the bullet grazed his head. When the shot was fired, Jack, the horse, got rowdy and ran over Papas leg. Stacey hid in a ditch and saw Mr. Morrison fight the men. The men were the Wallaces!
17. R.W. and Melvin steal a lot of things. But things go wrong when they try to steal a pearl-handled pistol for T.J. ,at the store Cassie was kicked out of. The owner and his wife wake up and find them. R.W and Melvin knock them out, but when T.J. says hell tell, they beat him. T.J. goes to the Logan kids for help.
18. At T.Js House Stacey agreed to help T.J. get to T.J.s house. Once they got him through the window, the Wallaces and a few other men , including Melvin and R.W., show up. The Logans hid just in time. The men beat down the door with rifles and climbed through T.J. s window. They came out with Claude, T.J.s mom and dad, and T.J. They kicked T.J. and Claude. Stacey sent the others to get Papa.
19. Shortly after Papa left to go to T.J. s, a fire breaks out in the cotton field. They knew because they smelled the smoke. But they dont know who started the fire??? If it touched the trees on the other side of the field the fire would be almost impossible to stop. Mr. Granger got everyone to help. Even the people at T.J.s. The next day it was out but it took a good bit of the land.
20. T.J. goes to jail and gets put on a chain gang and where he may be killed. Sadly, 1/4th of the land was taken by the fire. Cassies dad probably went back to the railroad. Even though Cassie didnt really like T.J., she still cried for him. Him and the land.
