    2. July 11, 2012 2 Classification Grouping things according to similarities, or how they are alike, is called classification. About 2.5 million organisms have been discovered so far. Each year the list grows longer. The science of classifying living things is called taxonomy.

    3. July 11, 2012 3 Why classify? Classification is a way of organizing information about different kinds of living things. Classification also makes it easier for scientists to identify a newly discovered organism.

    4. July 11, 2012 4 Classifying Living Things Organisms are classified based on how they are alike. Taxonomists do not group organisms together simply because they look alike. Taxonomists study the characteristics of organisms using the cellular makeup of the organism the way the organism grows their DNA how the organism gets its energy.
