  2. The APTA Standards Program • APTA’s Executive Committee • Designated APTA as a Standards Development Organization • Established a permanent funding mechanism • Created a standing committee now called the Standards Development and Oversight Council

SDOCs Mission • Seek synergy among APTA’s transit standards programs • Bus • Rail • UTFS • Make APTA’s transit standards development a more attractive and effective investment for government agencies • Communicate the benefits of transit standards to the industry • Serve as a liaison with organizations outside of APTA that develop standards of importance to the public transportation industry

UTFS – Universal Transit Farecard Standards • Develop a series of documents that provides industry guidance for the creation of an open architecture payment environment that promotes greater access and convenience to the public transportation network and enables integration of independent payment systems. • Developing a partnership with the Transportation Council of the Smart Card Alliance – providing a broader view of issues affecting development of a farecard standard.

  6. TCIP – Transit Communication Interface Profile Standard • TCIP standards comprise the transit component of the ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) National Architecture. • TCIP defines the interaction among business systems in a transit operation and involves the development of ten business area standards for such operations as signal priority and scheduling. • Currently fully funded through the JPO – but standard distribution overseen by SDOC • Working in concert in UTFS on fare collection elements

Deliverables of APTA’s Standardization Work • Standards and Specifications • A Standard satisfies one of the conditions for mandatory use within the transit industry • Recommended Practice • Embodies the best practices of the industry • Guideline Specification • Intended to provide sample, specimen or template for use by a procuring entity • Report / White Paper • Least formal type of document
