  1. Median

  2. Median is defined as the middle value of the data when the data is arranged in ascending or descending order. To find the Median, place the numbers in ascending or descending order and find the middle value. For odd number we have only one middle number and that number is the median. For even numberwe have two middle numbers . Hence, we get median by taking average of the two middle numbers i.e we add the two numbers and divide the sum by two

  3. Example 1: find the Median of 12, 3 and 5 Put them in ascending order: 3 , 5 , 12 We have 3 numbers which is odd , therefore we have one middle number. The middle number is 5, so the median is 5. Example 2: find the Median of 20, 10 ,9, 8 Put them in ascending order: 8 , 9 , 10 , 20 We have 4 numbers which is even, therefore we have two middle numbers The two middle numbers are 9 and 10. To find median we add the two numbers and then divide by 2 9 + 10 = 19 then 19 ÷ 2 = 9.5 So the median is 9.5

  4. Where is the Middle? A quick way to find the middle: count how many numbers, add 1 then divide by 2 Example 1: There are 45 numbers 45 plus 1 is 46, then divide by 2 and we get 23 So the median is the 23rd number in the sorted list. Example 2: There are 66 numbers 66 plus 1 is 67, then divide by 2 and we get 33.5 33 and a half? That means that the 33rd and 34th numbers in the sorted list are the two middle numbers. So to find the median: add the 33rd and 34th numbers together and divide by 2.

  5. Example3: Find the median of the following numbers 3 , 13 , 7 , 5 , 21 , 23 , 39 , 23 , 40 , 23 , 14 , 12 , 56 , 23 , 29  When we put those numbers in order we have: 3 , 5 , 7, 12 , 13 , 14 , 21 , 23 , 23 , 23 , 23 , 29 , 39 , 40 , 56 There are 15 numbers which is odd, therefore there is only one middle number To get middle number we add the count by 1 and then divide by 2 15 plus 1 is 16, then divide by 2 and we get 8 Our middle is the eighth number The median value of this set of numbers is 23. (It doesn't matter that some numbers are the same in the list.)

  6. Example4: Find the median of the following numbers 3 , 13 , 7, 5 , 21 , 23 , 23 , 40 , 23 , 14 , 12 , 56 , 23 , 29  When we put those numbers in order we have: 3 , 5 , 7 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 21, 23 , 23 , 23 , 23 , 29 , 40 , 56 There are 14 numbers which is even, therefore we will have two middle number To get middle number we add the count by 1 and then divide by 2 14 plus 1 is 15, then divide by 2 and we get 7.5 7.5 means our middle numbers are seventh and the eighth number Our two middle numbers 21 and 23. To find median we add the two numbers and then divide by 2 21 + 23 = 44 then 44 ÷ 2 = 22 So the median is 22

  7. Try these What is the median of the numbers 3, 11, 6, 5, 4, 7, 12, 3 and 10 ? What is the median of the numbers 4, 2, 11, 6, 2, 9 ? What is the median of the numbers 75, 83, 69, 56, 71, 80, 65, 67, 77 and 44 ?
