  3. Application Problem Read Draw Write There are 83 girls and 76 boys in the third grade. How many total students are in the third grade?

  4. Concept Development Problem 1 Materials: 12 counters per student Personal whiteboards Skip-count to find the total number of objects 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 20 10 twos 10 groups of two is 20

  5. Concept Development Problem 2 Understand how repeated addition, counting groups in unit form, and multiplication equations are alike. 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2= 12 6 twos = 12 6 x 2 = 12

  6. Concept Development Problem 3 Write multiplication sentences from equal groups. 4 + 4 = 8 or 2 x 4 = 8 or 4 x 2 = 8

  7. Concept Development Look at the picture and the multiplication sentence. Check my work by writing an addition sentence and counting to find the total number of objects. 3 x 4 = 12

  8. Problem Set You have 10 minutes to complete the worksheet.

  9. Student Debrief On the first page, what did you notice about the answers to your problems? In Problem 2, how would you change the picture to show equal groups? Discuss the relationship between repeated addition and the unit form – 2 groups of three or 3 groups of two, depending on the drawing. Discuss the relationship between repeated addition, counting groups in unit form, and multiplication sentence 3 x 2 = 6. Review the new vocabulary, including efficient, number sentences, andequations.
