  1. Standards-Based Report CardParent OrientationPresentation Huntsville City Schools 1st and 2nd Grade 2013-2014

  2. Welcome! • This presentation is designed to help parents understand Huntsville City Schools’ new Standards-Based Report Card • It will also explain, clarify, and inform about the educational and communicative benefits derived from a Standards-Based Report Card.

  3. What does “Standards-Based” mean? • Academic Standards are public statements about what students should know and be able to do. • Alabama has adopted the College and Career Readiness Skills based on the Common Core • http://alex.state.al.us/ccrs/

  4. Why the change? • By using a standards-based grading and reporting system we can readily identify academic strengths and weaknesses. Standards-based reporting will focus on four essential questions. 1. What do students need to know and be able to do? 2. How will we know that they have mastered it? 3. What will we do when they haven't mastered it? 4. What will we do when they already know it?

  5. What does it mean for my child? • Standards-based reporting means that your child will be scored on mastery of a skill (rubric 1-4); not comparison to others (percentile). • The progress reports and report card will document your child’s development of these standards throughout the year.

  6. ReportCard: 1st Grade

  7. Report Card: 1st Grade _____promoted _____retained NEXT ASSIGNMENT_______ grade

  8. How will my child get grades? • A student’s performance of a standard will be identified from a rubric • A rubric is a scoring guide that helps teachers evaluate student performance based on a range of criteria • Huntsville City Schools has adopted a 4 point rubric system

  9. Rubric • Traditional letter grades have been replaced with a numeric 4, 3, 2, 1 scoring scale.

  10. What happens if my child is struggling? • A standards-based system is designed to quickly and efficiently identify and isolate academic weaknesses • This allows the teacher to more effectively begin and address remediation for a specific skill that needs further development

  11. What happens if my child has already mastered these skills? • If a child has mastered the set standards, the rubric allows teachers to provide enrichment to ensure that a student is academically growing. • If a student receives a 4, it will indicate that he/she is working on enrichment material/skills and has mastered that indicator/skill • Although a student may achieve a perfect score on tests, it does not always indicate mastery. Further enrichment activities will need to be provided to assess if a student can apply this skill in multiple situations to insure the skill has been mastered.

  12. Questions and concerns • As the year progresses you may have questions about standards-based reporting • Never hesitate to contact your child’s teacher when a question arises • The purpose of this change is to ensure that a child is mastering exact and specific standards to help prepare them for their future!

  13. Standards-Based Reporting Thanks for your support and understanding during this exciting new time for Huntsville City Schools!
