  1. THE APOSTLES’ CREED – 2NDARTICLEOUR REDEMPTION Lesson 37 Faith Foundations Course One

  2. FROM WHAT HAS CHRIST REDEEMED US?

  3. FREEDOM • Read Romans 8:7 and Ephesians 2:1. Summarize the message of these two verses. By nature we are unable to keep from sinning because our sinful mind cannot submit to God’s law. We are dead in sin.

  4. FREEDOM • When a member of an evangelism team explained to a stranger why we all need a Savior, the man responded, “Yeah, I’m a sinner. I’ve actually done some pretty bad things in my life. But everybody sins. It’s no big deal.” Read Matthew 13:49,50. How was the stranger wrong? Sin is a big deal. A horrible judgment awaits the wicked.

  5. FREEDOM • Read Colossians 2:13. How did God change our lives? He forgave our sins and made us spiritually alive through faith.

  6. FREEDOM • Read Romans 8:1. Why aren’t Christians afraid of the coming judgment? Jesus has taken away all our guilt, so we won’t be punished.

  7. FREEDOM • Vanessa realized that her roommate was very afraid of God and the punishment her sin had earned. If you were Vanessa, what could you tell her? Because Jesus set us free, we are forgiven. We are no longer considered guilty.

  8. FREEDOM • Mr. Daniels in an alcoholic. Every time he is tempted to drink, he remembers the words of John 8:34,36. How do those verses help him? They remind him that Christ has set him free from the guilt and the slavery to sin.

  9. KEY POINT #1 Christ has redeemed us fromsin.

  10. LIFE • The tragedies that take place in our world are the results of sin. Read Romans 5:12 and Matthew 10:28. What horrible result of sin is mentioned in these passages? Death and suffering in hell.

  11. LIFE • Read John 11:25,26. These words seem to be a riddle. How can a person live even though he dies? We all die physically, but believers in Jesus won’t die eternally.

  12. LIFE • How can we be sure that death won’t be a tragedy for us according to these passages: a. John 14:19 Because Jesus rose from the dead, we will live with him forever in heaven. b. 1 Corinthians 15:54-57 Death has been swallowed up in Christ’s victory. c. 2 Timothy 1:10 Our Savior has destroyed death.

  13. LIFE • How was Grandpa able to speak of hope even though he was dying? Because Jesus had arisen, Grandpa knew that he had a treasure waiting for him in heaven.

  14. KEY POINT #2 Christ has redeemed us from death.

  15. VICTORY • Read 1 John 3:8. Why did Jesus some to earth? To destroy the devil’s work.

  16. VICTORY • Read 1 Peter 5:8. The apostle says we need to be on guard because the devil is constantly on the lookout for those he can devour. What does it mean that he is trying to “devour” us? To destroy us by destroying our faith and relationship with Jesus.

  17. KEY POINT #3 Christ has redeemed us from the power of the devil.

  18. VICTORY • List several traps Satan uses to devour us. Theories like evolution to undermine our faith. Immoral TV shows and movies that try to turn us to a wicked way of life. The lie that all our stuff is a source of security and happiness.

  19. VICTORY • A man once said, “Every time I hear of another divorce, I get mad at Satan… The same is true when I hear of a person who quits coming to church or of a former Christian who chooses to live in adultery. I know he has trapped another soul.” Is the man’s reaction appropriate? Yes. Satan wins many battles. But Jesus has won the war!

  20. VICTORY • How did Jesus redeem us from slavery to Satan? By keeping God’s law perfectly in our place and paying for our guilt by his death.

  21. FROM WHAT HAS CHRIST REDEEMED US? • Christ has redeemed us from sin. • Christ has redeemed us from death. • Christ has redeemed us from the power of the devil. SUMMARY Christ has redeemed us from sin, death, and the power of the devil.

  22. 1 John 1:7 The blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin.

  23. The 2nd Article of the Apostles’ Creed I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried…

  24. The 2nd Article of the Apostles’ Creed He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

  25. The 2nd Article of the Apostles’ Creed What does this mean? I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord…

  26. The 2nd Article of the Apostles’ Creed He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil, not with gold or silver but with his holy, precious blood and with his innocent suffering and death.
