When you do use a tag, use “said” most often. Everything else, use sparingly
Often we use action lines instead of a tag: • Eg. “No,” he said. “No.” He jumped after her
Avoid adverbs in tag lines • E.g. Instead of : “Yes,” she said lovingly • Try: “Yes, my love,” she said.
Vary the placement of the tags: • BEGINNING: The coach said, “Run!” • END: “Run! the coach said • MIDDLE: “Run,” the coach said, “and fast!”
