  2. The November revolution. In November 1917, squads of red guards-armed factory workers joined mutinous sailors from the Russian fleet in attacking the government. In a matter of days Lenin's forces over threw the government that no longer had any support.

  3. Bolsheviks in charge. • The Bolsheviks seized power in other cities. • The Bolsheviks also ended private ownership of land and distributed land to peasants. • The workers were given total control of the factories and mines.

  4. Under siege. • After the Bolshevik Revolution, Lenin sought peace with Germany. • Russia signed the treaty of Brest- Litovsk in march 1918. • For three years, civil war raged. • Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania broke free, but nationalist in Ukraine, the Caucasus, and Central Asia were eventually subdued.
