Purpose of Community Projects • Promote Reading/Literacy in the community • Provide service to the community • Involve members • Promote relationships with other organizations • Be visible in the community • Promote the goals of IRA and ARA • Receive recognition from IRA and ARA
Ideas for Community Projects: • Reading Day at the Mall • Children give book reviews (radio, TV, newspaper) • Sponsor a literacy float in a local parade • Collect books for an institution • Publish a list of recommended children’s books • Weekly Readers • Set up a booth in a local mall • Present new books and parenting tips to new mothers in the hospital
What some local councils did… • White River collected money and purchased books for their county library • Reading on the Ridge did Kids Helping Kids. Free admission to football game by donating a book at the gate. Five hundred books were collected and taken to the Mission Outreach of Paragould. The Team Read Club helped organize and package the books. • Arkadelphia Area had Punt, Pass, and Kick for Books. We donated the books raised to the Jr. Auxiliary's Angel Tree Project at Christmas
Northeast Arkansas placed parenting and children's magazines at a local women's shelter and also hosted a community wide African American Read-In Chain. • South Arkansas Reading Council did a magazine/book drive for the local women's crisis center. • Arkansas River Valley participated in a community wide National Night Out in August with a booth. They distributed books to young children, and spoke to children and adults in our community concerning literacy opportunities in their area.
Jefferson County did Booster Book Bags (gallon bags with colors, book, stickers, pencil, & parent info about the importance of reading to your child) which were delivered to the County Health Department to be given to children coming for their kindergarten shots. They also made bags for ACCESS an organization that helps teenage mothers who are pregnant or who are new mothers.
IRA Local Council Community Service Award This award is judged in six categories: • Uniqueness/Creativity • Effective literacy impact on the community • Involvement of council members • Ease of replication • Clarity of application • Preparation of materials http://www.reading.org/Libraries/Awards/local.sflb.ashx
