Presentation • KID 2016: 5th edition of the Summer School “Knowledge Dynamics, Industrial Evolution, Economic Development” • CNRS thematic school • KID is an international event, with about 20 institutions, 15 countries • Speakers of past editions: Paula Stephan, Maryann Feldman, ReinhildeVeugelers, Mary O’Sulllivan, Ines Macho Stadler, Rosina Moreno, Valeria Costantini, David Audretsch, Ron Boschma, Uwe Cantner, Alan Kirman, David Perez Castrillo, Davide Consoli, Sandro Montresor, Paolo Saviotti, Cristiano Antonelli, Francesco Lissoni, Marco Vivarelli, Alex Coad, Aldo Geuna, Pablo d’Este, Andreas Pyka, Michael Dietrich, Francesco Crespi, Massimiliano Mazzanti, Michael Fritsch

Aims and scope • Interest in the following sets of issues: 1. heterogeneity of knowledge (bits of knowledge, more or less combinable), of the sources of change (i.e. individuals, firms, industries, regions, countries), of the interactions between these sources (market-based, network-based, etc.), and of the characteristics of these interactions (frequency, regularity, etc.) 2. variety in innovation (from the more radical to the more incremental), and in regimes of innovation (entrepreneurial mode versus accumulation mode) 3. generation of different paths of growth, with some leading to smart, inclusive, and sustainable growth => The summerschool is intended to provide an advanced understanding of these issues, as well as of the link between the issues

Aims and scope • Discovering the latest results, especially: • The way in which the properties of knowledge are likely to have an impact on industry evolution and economic performance • The way in which industry evolution may contribute to economic growth and sustainability • Accessing the latest methodologies and protocols of research • Presenting your own work as PhD student or young researcher, and getting comments and recommendations on how to get published • Being updated on what’s happening in social sciences (economics, management, geography, social economics, etc.), but also in other sciences (computer science, biology) as they provide key tools in the treatment of the relationships between knowledge, innovation and development (social network analysis, evolutionary models, agent-based modelling)

Aims and scope • Some of the issues specificallycovered by the speakers are: • economics of science and innovation, intellectualpropertyrights, agglomeration/dispersion of research and industrialactivities, nascent versus mature industries, emergence and persistence of innovation, entrepreneurship, growth of firms, globalizedfirms, innovation networks, environment as a driver of innovation • Some of the methodologies and protocols of researchunderstudy are: • Statisticalanalysis of the dynamics of firmscharacteristics and firmslocalization, social network analysis, agent basedmodelling, patent analysis

Structure • General lectures (1h30): speakers will give a general overview of major contributions in the literature, including the more recent developments • Methodological or technical lectures (1h30): speakers will give a focus on a specific methodology or technique that is particularly useful in understanding recent developments in the literature • Research and publication sessions (30-40 minutes per student): students will present their research and will get comments and feedbacks from the speakers, including recommendations on how to get published

Research and publication sessions • Studentscouldcirculatetheirwork to discussants in advance in view of - feedbacks on a preliminaryresearchproject - interactions on a draft of a PhDthesischapter - more focusedadvices on a paper to besubmitted to an academic journal • Format: 15-20 minutes presentation + 10-15 minutes commentsfrom the discussant + remaining time for general discussion

  17. KID Prize • The KID 2016 prize will award the best paper (presented during the students presentations sessions) • The scientific committee selects the best KID 2016 paper • Results will be announced on Friday 15 during the Summer School Dinner
