Understanding Mean, Median, Mode, and Range: A Fun Race Activity

Participate in an engaging team-based activity designed for students to learn about mean, median, mode, and range through a competitive race format. Teams of four will work together to rearrange numbers, calculate statistical values, and strategize to finish quickly. Each race presents different sets of numbers, allowing students to apply their mathematical skills. The team that accumulates the most points wins. This interactive approach not only reinforces statistical concepts but also fosters teamwork and communication.

  2. 1 2 3 4 MMMR Review • Always rearrange numbers from LOWER to HIGHER • MEAN: (Sum of all values) / No. of values • MEDIAN: Middle value or mean of two middle values • MODE: Value that occurs most often • RANGE: Greatest value – Least value

  3. 1 2 3 4 Example • Find the mean, median, mode, and range: 13, 18, 13, 14, 13, 16, 14, 21, 13 Rearrange: 13, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 16, 18, 21 MEAN:(13 + 18 + 13 + 14 + 13 + 16 + 14 + 21 + 13) ÷ 9 = 15 MEDIAN: 14 MODE: 13 RANGE: 21 – 13 = 8

  4. 1 2 3 4 Race Rules • Play in teams of 4 • Work with your team to find the MEAN, MEDIAN, MODE, and RANGE • Write answers on the results sheet* • Raise results sheet when done writing answers • The sooner you cross the finish line, the more points you receive • Team with the most points wins!
