Amp-Hour Meters

Amp-hour meters, like the Tri-Metric 2020, are essential tools for monitoring battery systems. They display the system's condition by counting the amp-hours used and counting backwards to zero, indicating when batteries are fully charged. They are crucial for nickel-cadmium and nickel-iron batteries, as voltage alone does not reveal their state of charge. Regularly running batteries in a very discharged state can reduce accuracy over time. These meters help record voltage, amp-hours, and total usage, ensuring optimal battery performance.

  2. What is it? • Indicates system’s condition • Counts amp-hours used when using power • Counts backwards to zero • Zero means battery is fully charged • Nickel-cadmium / nickel-iron batteries • Hard to tell state of charge from voltage • Sulfation caused by undercharging is main destroyer of lead-acid batteries *Note: Amp hour meters lose accuracy if batteries are always run in a very discharged state.

  3. Tri-Metric 2020 Battery Monitor Amp-Hour Meter–Creative Energy Technologies • 12 or 24 volt battery systems (48 w/ adapter) • Lit when charging, flashes when charged • Volts, Amps, Amp-Hours Amp-Hours in numbers or as % full • Records min/max voltage, days since charged and equalized, total lifetime amp-hours withdrawn

  4. Shunts • Required for operation • Based on inverter type and watts • Relatively inexpensive
