November 2011 The newsletter of the Fitzroy Harbour Community Association FHCA est. 1976 www.fitzroyharbour.com Volume xiii – Issue XI Annual Children’s Christmas Party Ho Ho Ho – Santa is coming to Fitzroy Harbour. Santa is coming to the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre on Saturday, December 3rd from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm with Santa arriving at 12 noon! For Fitzroy Harbour children (ages 0 to 10).Please join us for crafts & colouring; face painting; music; Christmas movies; fruit, yogurt and cupcakes, and of course the opportunity to sit on Santa’s knee! New this year is a performance by JUNKYARD SYMPHONY from 11am-12 noon! FOR ADULTS’ EYES ONLY: NEW THIS YEAR! Make this year’s Christmas party even more memorable by having Santa give your child a gift from his or her wish list!  Parents are encouraged to drop off a pre-wrapped gift for your child/children, which Santa will distribute at the party.  Gifts must be a maximum of $10 and be clearly labelled with the child’s full name and age.  Gifts must be dropped off to our volunteers at the Community Centre prior to the event! Drop off times: Thursday, December 1st from 6 to 8 pm, or Saturday, December 3rd from 8-9 am. Questions about the Children’s Christmas Party? New deck at the Community Centre The FHCA is pleased to announce that through a City of Ottawa grant, the Community Centre now has a new deck installed at the front of the building. Plans are for the deck to have patio tables and chairs during the warmer months. As well, the Community Association will be looking into getting a liquor license this location. The Fitzroy Peeper Outdoor Hockey League Sign up day for FHCA Outdoor Hockey is November 30thfrom 7pm to 9pm a the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre. Age group teams are organized for boys and girls ages 5 and up to participate in a recreational outdoor hockey program. Each team has approximately one practice a week and one game a week versus teams from other West Carleton communities. For more information, contact Robert at 613-623-6853 or ohl@fitzroyharbour.com. Thank you from the Girl Guides A big “thank you” goes out to Kai and the staff at the Harbour Store for letting our girls sell Girl Guide cookies outside.  A warm thank you also goes out to residents of Fitzroy Harbour who bought cookies from us as we went door to door. Despite the cool weather, our campaign was a great success and proceeds will be going to our upcoming winter camp. Protect yourself and your loved ones from the seasonal flu The flu vaccine is safe, free and the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones from the flu. Getting the flu shot is an easy way to avoid missing school or work, or passing on the flu to those around you. The City of Ottawa will host a flu shot clinic at the former Township Office (Kinburn Client Service Centre) on Thursday November 15 from 3:30 pm to 8:30 pm. Public Meeting: Village Plan Review In the spring of 2011 the City of Ottawa consulted with residents regarding their Village Plans, asking for input on their future vision for their village. City staff will be reporting back on the findings of the Spring consultations and presenting the proposed revisions to the Village Plans. Please plan to attend an upcoming meeting to provide input on the revised Plan for Fitzroy Harbour: Saturday November 19 from9 am to noon at the West Carleton Community Complex (former Township Office). Carp River Erosion Review The City of Ottawa is looking at ways to stabilize the slope of the Carp River behind the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre to prevent further deterioration.   2. Fitzroy Harbour Annual Craft Show The FHCA Annual Craft Show and Trade Fair will be held at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre on Saturday November 26 from 9AM to 3PM. Lunch available. Youth Connexion Update Regular drop-in activities include gaming, movies, music, games, air hockey, foosball, ping pong and more! The Connexion Lounge at the Fitzroy Harbour Community Centre has free Wi-Fi, so youth are more than welcome to bring laptops to do homework on, or other wireless devices.  It will cost $2, to come to the Lounge, but you can purchase Youth Connexion Cards for $20 to be used at any youth night or teen volleyball in Fitzroy at The Connexion Lounge. Tuesdays: 3:00-4:30pm  for ages 14-17 4:30-6:00pm for ages 10-13. Thursdays: 6:00-7:30pm for ages 10-13 7:30- 9:00pm for ages 14-17. FHCA Outdoor Rink Canteen duty – volunteers needed The Fitzroy Harbour Community Association will be creating the volunteer “Canteen Duty” schedule for the outdoor rink next month. Staffing the canteen with adult volunteers helps us get an extra grant of $2100 from the City of Ottawa. Premier's Award for Agri-food Innovation Excellence The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has an opportunity to win a cash prize to recognize agri-food innovations at your farm operation. There are 55 regional awards of $5,000 each, and two larger awards of $50,000 and $100,000. Deadline to apply: November 14. The Premier’s Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence was established in 2006 to recognize and foster innovation in the agri-food industry.
